Review In EXTREMIST: A Response to Geert Wilders & Terrorists Everywhere, Qasim Rashid has done a great service to Muslims and non-Muslims alike by challenging the scurrilous attacks on Islam by an influential Islamophobe. The only answer to Islamophobia, which promotes, hatred, fear, and violence, is scholarship and debate. Most helpful customer reviews 24 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Sincere author misses the point of Wilders' book By Michael The author seems to be to be a highly intelligent and learned person. He is likely an excellent person and anyone would be pleased to have him as a neighbor. I understand that any religious text can be interpreted in many ways to prove almost any point. The essential point of Wilders' book is that militant Islam seeks to replace Western culture with its version of totalitarianism. Rashid does not address this thesis. Instead, he goes to great lengths to show that Wilders does not interpret religious text accurately and that he is not a scholar. So what? What about the problems within Islamic culture that are causing so much turmoil today? While it was instructive to read this book, it did not address Wilders' thesis. Rashid's interpretation of Islam gives me hope because it shows that "moderate" Islam is possible and that the reformation is being addressed from within. Men like Rashid are important leaders for their faith and I wish him well. He too is under attack by the militants. This only further shows to me that Islam has indeed been hijacked. I would like to read a thoughtful book by a Muslim that addresses this issue. This is not that book. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I knew very little of Islam before I read Qasim ... By William J. Filetti I knew very little of Islam before I read Qasim Rashid’s book Extremism. In fact, I have not a single friend who is a Muslim prior to a few months ago. Rashid’s format is mono-directed at a single person and his writing, but it does serve to debunk some commonly held beliefs in the western world about Islam and serves as a real primer to those who are neophytes on their knowledge of Islam. I think that the format that Rashid uses is interesting because it takes each “allegation” of Wilder’s and thru scholarship indicates where is thin or simply untrue to the tenets of Islam. Extremism is not the “tell all” of Islam, but it will make the reader more educated about Islam and

some of the major (dis)beliefs about the religion. With the disproportionately large amount of media coverage being given to the extremist view and actions of radical Islam (universally condemned by Muslims) “Extremist” is a book that helps even the score on understanding true Islam. If only the media reported this peaceful and loving view of Islam in the proportion it deserves. 15 of 23 people found the following review helpful. This book is as timely as it is brilliant. By Brian At a time when western media outlets and politicians, by agreeing with their interpretations, legitimize terrorist views on Islam, this book comes to set the record straight. It proves that the most important thing to fighting anti-Islam movements and terrorist interpretations is education. The "war on terror" can only be won if we arm enough people with the correct knowledge to fight against the extremist views on both sides. This is not a war of east vs west, but a war for the heart of Islam. People are so pessimistic about the world they see violent criminals and take their actions to be the truth of Islam, and assumes peaceful Muslims ( the overwhelming majority) are some type of anomaly, simply because Islam is so foreign to us in the west. Any objective reader will read this for exactly what it is, a refutation of extremes and call to all people to unite under the call for peace. The holy Qur'an states unequivocally, " there is no compulsion in religion" and " And if thy Lord had enforced his will, surely, all who are in the earth would have believed together. Wilt thou, then, force men to become believers?" . See all 47 customer reviews...
