Great reference guide for many color knitting techniques By Underground Crafter (Full disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from Wiley.) Like the other books in the Teach Yourself VISUALLY series, this book has limited text and emphasizes step-by-step photographs and charts. This book takes an encyclopedia approach to color knitting and explores many techniques briefly. Mary assumes you already know the knitting basics and aims to help you differentiate the types of color knitting and provide you with basic skills for each technique. Why Knit In Color? gives an introduction to color theory and terminology. The chapter includes a pattern for rainbow reptiles, knit snakes worked in various color combinations to illustrate primary, secondary, tertiary, and analogous colors. Color Knitting Yarns shares the properties of different animal, plant, and synthetic fibers, with particular emphasis on how the different fibers react to dye and the color options available. Mary also discusses the structure of the yarn (plys, texture, weight, and dyeing method) - again, with an emphasis on why certain yarns might work well with different types of colorwork. In Explore Stripes, Mary shares tips for joining new colors and jogless knitting. She also includes patterns for a striped hat, vest, and turtleneck, as well as 12 color charted stitch patterns using stripes. Discover Slip-Stitch Patterns starts with swatches showing the possibilities of slip stitch knitting for colorwork. Mary includes tips for slipping stitches whether working flat or in the round. As with most books that attempt to cover a lot of ground, there isn't enough detail in any one section to serve as a definitive guide. The projects are varied and each demonstrates a particular technique. This book is helpful as a reference guide but may not have enough detail in some sections for a newbie to color knitting. If you learn best from photographs and can piece together the steps in your mind without a lot of text, this will be a great book for you. If you have some exposure to different colorwork techniques but need to be reminded of tips and tricks, this would also be a helpful book. By Shala Kerrigan I'm an advanced beginner knitter. I understand the basic concepts, and have done some easy lace knitting and easy colorwork, can knit in the round on both dpns and circular needles and have done some bead knitting. My daughter is about the same level. Since both of us wanted to learn a lot more about color knitting and have liked a lot of the other books in the Teach Yourself Visually series, we were excited about this one. It starts with color theory. Explaining the value, hue, saturation and temperature of colors as well as a bit about how to build palettes and find inspiration. The next chapter covers yarn types and explains fabric terms like drape and hand. Then it gets into the colorwork. What I like best about the Teach Yourself Visually series is the logical progression. Starting with simple things and working up to more challenging things. If you're a beginner, you will probably find new things even in simple techniques. It will help you master them more quickly by filling in gaps. Stripes is the first chapter, and it shows examples of how different stripe patterns are knitted. Starting with the absolute basics, it shows how to add a new color and carry a strand for garter or stockinette horizontal stripes. There are also two methods for working with circular needles to make jogless rounds so the stripes are even. Then there are projects using the technique. The hat is my favorite. That's the way the whole book laid out. Introduction to the technique, then a project to help you learn it. Each chapter/technique ends with an idea gallery. Slipstitch, stranded colorwork, intarsia, entrelac, modular knitting, then finally embellishment are all explained well with lots of photographs and projects that are whimsical and fun. Lots of hats and sweaters in this book which makes my hat loving daughter insanely happy. The charts are graphed on the square, instead of being more proportional to the stitches however each chart has a knitted example so you can see the distortion. They are so cute, a little mouse, a skully argyle and a woman's pump for example. The final chapter covers more advanced techniques for construction. It's well indexed to allow you to find what you need easily. I recommend it for beginning and advanced beginning knitters who want to step up their knitting and include images and color patterns. It helped my daughter and I a lot. We both prefer to work with our own charts, but the patterns provided will work with charts we design so we will learn more about the construction as well as color work. What A Treat! By Kaylynn McClister I was so looking forward to this book, being a huge fan of the knitting genius that is Mary Scott Huff. I decided to not even crack the cover until I was ensconced in my cosy chair with a cuppa, to draw out the delicious anticipation. Well! It was absolutely worth the wait. After only my initial
perusal, I'm thrilled with this book. The color photographs are amazing and the attention to detail is so thorough. It's chalk full of beautiful projects that won't be intimidating, because the instruction is so wonderfully laid out. Although I know I'll want to jump right in knitting, this is a book that will compel me to actually read all the technical information, as it's put forth so clearly and with the author's whimsy and sense of humor. I'm confident that with this book in hand, I'll finally acquire a working knowledge of not only color knitting, but color therory as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone enamored with color work in knitting and especially for those of us who have looked on adoringly, but thought it was too hard.
