If your not familiar with Castlevania it might not be fore you...Or if you want to get into Castlevania it's not a bad start. 9 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Better used for toilet paper than reading material By C. Chung I typically don't buy print manga because it's so hit or miss, but as a hardcore Castlevania fan, I decided to give this book a shot. After all, I had just bought the Castlevania figures from NECA and the Nintendo Wii `Castlevania: Judgment' over the weekend, so this was a logical choice for my collection. So how was it? It was a festering pile of crap. Seriously, you can't get much worse than this garbage. Billed as a connector to the subpar `Castlevania: Curse of Darkness' game, this story offered nothing new, redeeming, or even noteworthy to the franchise mythos. Instead it was a utterly boring, stupid, and pathetic attempt to capitalize off the franchise just to make a few dollars. Honestly, I have no clue as to why it's billed as a Castlevania story, because it really has nothing to do with the universe except some lame and superficial associations here and there.
The "plot", if there is such a thing in this story, starts off with nothing more than the stereotypical tween boy having to deal with horrible things. Apparently Japanese manga and anime writers can't break away from young boys as the protagonists. But hey, at least it wasn't a young boy forced to pilot a giant robot. Never-the-less, does anyone outside of NAMBLA feel connected to, or represented by, pre-teen boys? Towards the end we do get more focus on real, canonical Castlevania characters, but the attempt is too little far too late. (Oh, and the main character's name is Ted. TED! Of all the distracting names to woefully and inadequately represent Romanian characters, "Ted" surely comes close to the list. Granted we all know more common names are used for marketing reasons over true ethnic Eastern European ones, but all Kou Sasakura could come up with was Ted?! If that's not a serious lack of talent, I don't know what is...) As if the writing wasn't bad enough, the art was terrible. I especially liked how it was too difficult to draw in characters' eyes half the time. (But at least the speed lines looked decent.) Pulp manga isn't known for it's high level of depth---especially the stuff brought over by TokyoPop, but come on, this art was just dreadful even for manga standards. There was no talent, skill, or love performed on the art, and once again it was clearly "factory" produced junk just to make a quick profit. We all know franchise-based prose generally sucks. Not always, but more often than not. That's a given. But in this case, there was no effort or creativity. It was just mindless slop thrown together and called Castlevania for no other reason than that. It brings nothing new to the scene, and it's a complete waste of time and money. You'll have more fun hitting yourself in the forehead with a hammer than reading this insipid tripe.
