PEDICULOSIS​ ​(LICE)​ ​SCREENING Background Alberta​ ​Health​ ​Services​ ​recommends​ ​students​ ​infested​ ​with​ ​lice​ ​are​ ​not​ ​to​ ​attend​ ​school​ ​until they​ ​have​ ​received​ ​one​ ​appropriate​ ​treatment​ ​using​ ​one​ ​of​ ​the​ ​pediculicide​ ​products recommended​ ​by​ ​the​ ​Alberta​ ​Health​ ​Services. Procedures 1. A​ ​fundamental​ ​premise​ ​of​ ​this​ ​administrative​ ​procedure​ ​is​ ​that​ ​lice​ ​are​ ​a​ ​nuisance,​ ​not​ ​a health​ ​hazard​ ​and​ ​parents/legal​ ​guardians​ ​have​ ​the​ ​prime​ ​responsibility​ ​to​ ​deal​ ​with​ ​lice​ ​and nits​ ​by​ ​using​ ​one​ ​of​ ​the​ ​pediculicide​ ​products​ ​recommended​ ​by​ ​Alberta​ ​Health​ ​Services.​ ​If parents/legal​ ​guardians​ ​cannot​ ​afford​ ​to​ ​buy​ ​the​ ​product,​ ​Alberta​ ​Health​ ​Services​ ​will provide​ ​the​ ​product​ ​at​ ​no​ ​cost. 2. Principals​ ​and​ ​staff​ ​are​ ​to​ ​work​ ​collaboratively​ ​with​ ​personnel​ ​from​ ​the​ ​Alberta​ ​Health Services​ ​to​ ​assist​ ​with​ ​parent/legal​ ​guardian​ ​education.​ ​Principals​ ​are​ ​to​ ​discuss​ ​this​ ​with their​ ​Alberta​ ​Heath​ ​Services​ ​nurse​ ​and​ ​make​ ​suitable​ ​arrangements​ ​preferably​ ​in September/October​ ​and​ ​after​ ​Christmas​ ​for​ ​the​ ​distribution​ ​of​ ​Alberta​ ​Health​ ​Services information​ ​materials​ ​in​ ​their​ ​school​ ​newsletters​ ​and​ ​bulletins​ ​to​ ​parents/legal​ ​guardians. 3.
