INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITIES Authorised to deliver the accountabilities required of the Pharmacy Technician including meeting the key performance indicators (KPIs) established annually with the line Manager.  To provide an effective and efficient high quality pharmacy technician service to support all pharmacy department functions and activities in accordance with agreed pharmacy department business plans, standards and the requirements of the service’s customers.  To promote and support the direction and focus of pharmacy services and participate in project work as required.  To ensure efficient stock control, purchasing, supply and distribution of medicines to Waikato DHB Hospitals, departments and customers.  To provide medication information and education to patients and staff in accordance with pharmacy standards to increase understanding and improve health outcomes for patients.  To provide a high quality service through the application of excellent pharmacy practice and the maintenance of defined standards.  To comply with national legislation and local government regulations and the Waikato District Health Board policies and procedures in respect to quality and risk processes and improvements.  To participate as an active and valuable member of the clinical pharmacy and dispensary teams and contributes to the development and promotion of all pharmacy services and the pharmacy technician role including assisting in the education, training and orientation of pharmacy technicians and assistants.  To participate in compounding or extemporaneous and aseptic cytotoxic preparations as required. The scope of the technician includes, but is not limited to:  Assisting the Pharmacist in the preparation of prescriptions  Assisting the Pharmacist in the management of clinical trials  Assisting the Pharmacist in the provision of clinical services  Involvement in pharmacy projects  Assistance with compounding duties (if enrolled in, or completed, the required standard and level requirement for compounding)  Repacking of medicines  Inventory management  General pharmacy housekeeping duties  Clerical activities

TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES Quality and Patient Safety collective responsibilities  Be responsible for treating patients / service users with respect, dignity and compassion  Be responsible to the line manager for the provision of quality services; quality improvement is part of this and a fundamental duty of all staff, whatever their grade, role, service or base  Comply with DHB policies and procedures to ensure delivery of good quality care reporting risks to quality and safety to their line manager



 

Identify areas for improvement in their day to day work and to act upon these when appropriate and/or bring these to the attention of their line manager, in order that appropriate action may be taken. Participate in on-going quality improvement activities throughout the year within their team, service, site or department. Raise concerns with their line manager, if there are quality or patient / service safety issues in their area

ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES     

 

Work in partnership and contribute to a culture of innovation to actively seek ways to eliminate health inequities for people in rural communities, and remove barriers for people experiencing disability, Knows department emergency response plan and participates in response as applicable to the role.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Qualifications  Qualified Pharmacy technician (NZ certificate in Pharmacy (Technician)) or studying towards

this qualification. Desirable  Desirable to have experience and or qualification in aseptic compounding

Skills  Demonstrated:  ability to follow approved processes and train staff  



ability to work with and adapt to a variety of computerised systems written and oral presentation skills.

Understanding and knowledge or experience of health industry.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND WORK FUNCTION / ACTIVITY Work environment  Works inside pharmacies.  Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated Work function/activity  Physical demand is light.  Standing and walking is frequently required within pharmacies to collect medications, bottles and other equipment and to enable the delivery of filled prescriptions to patients.  May sit when filling out prescriptions, recording details of medicines and for whom the prescription has been prepared.  Stretching and reaching across is not a significant requirement of the job but may be required to store and collect medications.  Bending, squatting, crouching or kneeling is not a significant requirement of the job but may be required to store and collect medications.  Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of the job.  Contact with skin irritants or water may be required as working with a variety of medications, protective clothing and equipments should be utilised where possible.  Lifting, pulling or carrying is occasionally required but is unlikely to exceed the sedentary demand level.  Repetitive movements are not a significant component of the job but are likely to be required when filling prescriptions and when operating computers for data entry or keeping written records, writing labels.  Driving of vehicles is not a significant component of the job.  Use of hand tools/hand-held objects includes laboratory equipment, writing instruments and computers.  Mental activities necessary include technical, research, organisational, problem-solving and communication skills.
