I've read Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius many times, but can't say I've understood them as well as after reading Pierre Hadot. In fact it's a little embarrassing that I thought I understood them well before. After reading Hadot I can see how much I was missing. I got the general idea, but things are much clearer now. It's like putting on a new pair of glasses, everything suddenly comes into focus.If you like the Stoics and Epicureans, or just ancient philosophy in general, you must read this book. The introduction is mostly summary, but incredibly helpful in that regard. Each essay or lecture is presented with endnotes, Moreover, I want to point out that the content of these essays are, on their own, well worth the read.
