These sorting cards are great for differentiating phonics skills in your small group, and they are super easy to prep! I am a firm believer in teaching phonics small group, and these cards are a great tool for that! I copy the cards on colored cardstock, but they would work just as well on white cardstock. I laminate them, cut them out, and sort them by word family or vowel pattern. Each of my small group is usually working on different phonics skills, so I pull the sorting cards I need for each group, and keep them in separate bags for the length of time my group is working on them. When I have my group, I use the cards with stars as our headers, and we discuss the patterns in each word {for example, in the picture to the right, we were working on –ay, short a, and a__e. Then, we sort 6-9 words together, and as I put them on our chart, the students are writing them on their sorting page {available on the next page}. Alternatively, you could put these cards in a center and have students sort them according to vowel pattern.
