Marley(1) Organizations (1) JHU/Applied Physics Laboratory, (2) University of Arizona Abstract The Stratospheric TeraHertz Observatory (STO) balloon payload uses two stirling engine cryocoolers to cool its cryogenic instrument. One cryocooler is used to cool the inner vapor cooling shield (IVCS) of the liquid He cryostat that keeps its HEB mixers at 4K. The cryocooler cools the IVCS to 70K, it allows to extend the lifetime of the cryostat to >50 days. The second cryocooler cools a 4.7 THz quantum cascade laser that is used as local oscillator to power the 4.7 THz HEB mixer detector. Both cryocoolers combined require dissipating 400W to 500W of heat. We accomplish this by using a liquid cooling loop system connected with a large radiator attached to the gondola. The liquid used is Galden 3M which is a less expensive version of Fluorinert. Like Fluorinert the Galden 3M is a completely inert liquid, has an excellent heat capacity, and a freezing point of -70C, therefore preferable than glycol or water. This same liquid cooling system design was successfully flown on the APL BRRISON and BOPPS balloon missions. STO is a mission that requires accurate pointing at the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud. The two cryocoolers generate intense high frequency vibrations that would negatively affect the telescope pointing performance. To minimize the effects of these vibrations both cryocloolers are equipped with an active vibration damping system and are mounted to the cryostat on vibration isolators. The combination of active dampeners and vibration isolators reduces the cryocloolers induced vibrations below the threshold of sensitivity of our attitude control system. We will present the design and performance of the cryocoolers and cooling fluid system, as well as of the vibration dampening system for STO.
