This responsibility includes the approval of roadside appurtenances such as roadside memorials. In order to minimize the hazards of non-breakaway posts within the right-of-way, and in order to respectfully acknowledge the accident victim(s) while encouraging the safety of the motoring public, the following policy has been adopted: In the instance of a fatal accident along a county highway, permission for a roadside memorial may be requested from the Pike County Highway Department. Decorations will be permitted for 30 days following the fatal accident. Any decorations in place after that time may be removed by the highway authority. In the case of a multiple fatality accident, memorials shall be grouped together and shall be of a similar size. It is the responsibility of the installer to properly contact JULIE to avoid conflict with any underground utilities that exist within the right-of-way. The installer will be responsible for mowing and maintaining the area in the immediate vicinity of the memorial. If the memorial is damaged in any way, it will be the responsibility of the installer to repair or replace the memorial. Pike County Highway Department will assume no responsibility for maintaining any roadside memorials.
