Dear Dr. Elizabeth Quesada\ Greetings! I am writing to y ou as the PRB coordinator in the Philippines ofPinoy Reading Buddies USA 1 (PRB-USA). In PRB-USA, we facilitate student-driven literacy intervention where students collaborate to improve their thinking and ~omprehension skills through reading. We provide teachers with alternative and engaging teaching me~hods that empower young students through opportunities to explore and discuss books on a regular basis. I

One of the ways we accomp\ish this is by conducting workshops among school teachers, teaching them

how to engage young reader~ in the classroom. We are currently planning to host one ofthese workshops, catering particularly to scho?l teachers based in Quezon City, this March. I. Picture Walk (to express their thoughts and be creative) - Students will be given an array of I

images in sequence Vojhich they would have to make a story out of. The activity would allow the~ to possibly predict th\ real stmy behind the pictures. 2. Read Out Loud (to aevelop reading accuracy and language fluency) - Students will take turns reading the materials

3. Wot·d Wall (to expand one's vocabulary and improve comprehension)- Challenging words will be defined and placed\on a word wall.

4. Reading Log (to tract in one's development and achievements) - Each student will be able to complete a reading lo, which will then be collected by the teachers/facilitators. During the workshop proper, \the participants will go through these four activities, so that they may experience how each activity ii run first hand and familiarize themselves with the program. PRB will offer tllis workshop 1REE of charge for all participants. This is a voluntaty initiative by PRB to support school teachers in Que;zon City. We are members of the Science Book Reading Program (SBRP) Team, a project by Integrating Science in the Philippines (TSTP). TSTP is an organization that provides opportunities for Filipino youth to experience and immerse themselves in science and technology. In partnership with Pinoy Reading Buddies (PRB), we are currently developing altemative classroom methods that give schoolchildren opportunities to discover the world around them through science books that are relevant for their age and background. We hope to ask for your assistance in helping us bring these newly-developed methods to more public schools in Quezon City. Reading is an effective way for students to learn about their interests and to excel academically. By reading science books in pmiicular, students develop a curiosity that drives them to ask questions and pursue innovative ways to solve problems. This helps them grow into critical thinkers and insightful students that can initiate positive change in their communities and in the country. Our Interactive Storytelling Sessions (ISTS) aim to help iniprove students'! reading skills and expose them to science at the sm11e time through implementing Pitioy Reading Buddies' tried and tested progrmn with thoughtful modifications frm~ our team. These modifications are geared towards tmderstandi.ng the science concepts Pf·esented in these books and seeing them in their everyday lives. I

The ISTS progratP is currently in its infancy, and we aim to develop and improve the program as we gaih insight from implementing it in local public schools, focusing on Grade 4 s1:udents. As such, \ve are offering to hold the first of these interactive storytelling sessions for free for interested ~ublic schools in Quezon City. We would like to ask for your assistance in reaching out to mo~·e schools particularly through: • Securing a':'ailable venues and facilities for the sessions • Inviting and finding interested schools to participate I
