It was several years later, that .Homer's father, George McIntosh bought his mother her first kerosene lamp in Verona where 'he had gone with a load of railroad ties, and sold them to the Frisco Railway Company. The lamp was carried home with care in Mr. McIntosh's hands as he rode on the empty wagon. Once a week a trip was made to Cassville on horseback, usually by George to get the mail and any provisions needed. A gallon jug of kerosene was carried the eight miles by a rope tied to the jug and looped over the saddle horn. If the money on hand ran low before neecssary supplies were purchased, a ten cent box of sulphur matches could be cut in two and one half box bought for five cents. - The children attended Gunter_.§cho()l housc.£ in a log c~ .. l"ith split log benches. TIle schoolhouse was located at the spring .a mile or so Up'the creek from the McIntosh log.cabin ome. The spring was a cooling place for the children's traditional bottle of milk, with a stopper made by rolling a piece of white cloth to fit the bottle, the milk and a picce of cornbread comprised the noon meal. Later a better log house was built with pine lumber hauled from Massaman's Lumber Mill at Eureka Sprin!,'S, Arkansas. This house was located on the present premises, owned by the McIntosh brothers. George McIntosh, father of Homer, was born in Pittsburg, Penn., in ] 860 and was ten years old when he came to Barry County. Mr. Mcintosh and Alice Louise Wallen were married in 1881 at the Waldensian Presbyterian Church, south of Monett, by Rev. Solomon. They were the first non-member couple to be married in the church. Mr. and Mrs. McIntosh madc their home on the Wallen farm. Four children were born to this marriage, namely: Homer, Otis, Maude (Mrs. W. H. Carlin ) and Mabel who died in ]921. These children all attended Pleasant Dale Seqo.cl. r - TI'ieI\1cIntosh and Wallen acquaintance and friendship came about through Mr. Wallen's nccessary business trips to Cas-wille on horseback which led past the McIntosh homestead on Gunter Creek. Both families found it very enjoyable for Mr. Wallen to spend the nights of the three or four days' journey from his Kings Prairie farm to Cassville, and always there was remembering England and thc former ways of living.
