Chris: ! And now, all the way from London’s Red Carpet for his most highly rated film which ! ! premiered only 2 weeks ago! Doesn’t seem that long ago does it?! Director, ! ! ! Editor and everything else of perhaps the most successful independent film of! ! ! 2014, Henry Wright. !

! Henry:!Haha, Hello everyone.! !

Chris:! Well, what I’d like to start with first is how well the film actually went. Making over £50,000 ! on its opening weekend, you can’t be unhappy with that?!

!

Henry:!Oh of course! For such a low budget film its incredible its had such a great turn out. As ! ! you’ve said, it made around £50,000 on its opening weekend, but since then there’s been a ! grow on that to the current figure which stands at £80,500. !

!

Chris:! Though, its never about the money is it for you? From the figures, they do suggest a very ! high level of audience satisfaction in the film? What have you got back from your audience ! research concerning the matter?!

!

Henry:!Well I’m very pleased to say it’s had great success with our audiences. In total, we had over ! 1 million people come and watch the film, and they must have enjoyed it as we have now ! reached a rating of 9/10 stars on the IMDb website, I mean you can’t get much better can ! you? Unsurprisingly, it found a greater hit with our female audiences, who gave the film far ! higher ratings of around 9-10 stars compared with our male audiences, who still enjoyed it I ! hasten to add, but who rated it more around 7-9 stars.!

!

Chris:! I find that incredible really. The film was distributed to what? 40 private cinemas across the ! UK, yet you still had over 27,000 people go watch it? How is that possible!!

!

Henry:!Haha, I know, I too was astounded by the numbers. When the deal was made with Soda, ! the deal was that the film would be put out to at least 30 cinemas, with possibilities of ! ! branching out onto online venues and a DVD range to be created, which I can now confirm ! as we are now in collaboration on its creation having had such a successful turn out at the ! box office. About 75% of the viewers who watched the film saw it in cinemas, whilst around ! 20% saw it online whilst the final 5% saw it on Television screenings on Sky box office and ! other places similar. Its clear the magic of the cinema is still the preferred method of seeing ! films in this country.!

!

Chris:! So you don’t regret going with Soda rather than with one of the other more mainstream ! ! distributors?!

!

Henry: Oh of course not. I don’t believe the film would have been nearly as successful as it has ! ! been if it had gone out through any other distributor, and thats not me being biased. Soda is ! the distribution company for any low budget, British film. They, I quote ‘pride themselves on ! releasing challenging films and have a commitment to new British Cinema’, so they are the ! distribution company for this sort of film. Its quirky, British and challenging. Perfect.!

!

Chris:! Ok, but then why not go for someone like Film4? They’re especially british with far wider ! ! branches of experience. Or Lions gate? Or Warner Bros!!

!

Henry:!Film4 really specialises in TV distribution more than actual film distribution, which of course ! isn’t what I wanted. It’s much easier to sell a film rather than a TV show. Lions Gate? ! ! Warner Bros(!) While it would have been nice to have it distributed by Lions gate and even ! nicer to have it distributed by Warner Bros, however they are both American based ! ! distribution companies and I would prefer to keep the film as British as possible. That, and ! I doubt that either of them would ever have taken it haha, purely for the reason its not very

! !

!

mainstream, wouldn’t attract as many viewers as they would like, wouldn’t be worth their ! while in advertising and wouldn’t create enough revenue to make it worthwhile.!

Chris: ! The hard truth I suppose. We have here though a few example reviews of the film from ! ! audience posts on your Facebook film page:! ! ! “That was Brilliant! Really enjoyed it”-that was posted by a female audience member! ! ! “Well worth a watch, look forward to the next one”-again another female member! ! ! “That was great. Rory is the best evil teacher dude”-posted by a male member! ! All very positive comments. Pretty impressive stuff, considering you have never before ! ! produced a thriller of any kind? What research did you have to do to get to a stage where ! you felt you knew what it was that made a film a thriller?!

!

Henry:!Well I began by familiarising myself with different popular thriller films right from the early ! 60’s through to the modern day and identifying the things which set them apart and ! ! what crucially makes them thrillers. Watching movies such as Psycho, Scream, Black ! ! Swan, you begin to notice similarities. How they all play on a fairly simple aspect of our ! ! day-to-day lives, like in ours the use of numbers in everyday life controlling all our ! ! machinery, computers, dates, times etc. They use slow build ups to the main action to build ! tension in the viewer, so that when the chase scene or the murder scene finally arrives, all ! that anticipation can then be let out in a short time for maximum effect. I suppose this is ! ! what we call in the trade, the generic conventions of the film. The dark lighting of the scene, ! the fast staccato string sounds, and of course those iconic murder-man costumes which we ! all know and love. All these aspects I knew would have to be incorporated and were. All ! ! maybe slightly different from their regular images and uses but still there. The costume ! ! transformed into a professors uniform, the low key lighting still there in all the possession ! scenes and murder scenes and also the string sounds still giving us that tension required.!

!

Chris:! All the usuals. Well I’m afraid that’s all the time we’ve got, thank you very much for coming ! to talk with us today Henry, the very best of luck with the next film. Any snippets you’re able ! to give us?!

! Henry:!Well all I can say is that it involves the present, the future and all the time in-between…! !

Chris:! ooh, now there’s something for our visitors to be pondering on. Thanks very much Henry. ! To finish we have here … from your film which came in no.2 on our film music charts…
