Faculty Governance Committee

In the spirit of shared governance, the faculty governance committee provides faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences with a conduit for discussing with the dean ideas, initiatives, or issues of concern in the college. Although the faculty governance committee is not a decision-making body, it may act in an advisory capacity to the dean on new programs or policies in the College. The faculty governance committee is comprised of one elected member from each department in the College. Eligible members include tenure-track faculty and lecturers. Departmental elections are held annually in the spring for the upcoming year, and elected members serve for two academic years. The faculty governance committee typically meets with the dean once per month during the academic year. 3.

Curriculum Committee

The curriculum committee is comprised of one faculty representative selected by each department in the College and the coordinator of CLASS advising convened by an associate dean. The curriculum committee reviews and approves all curricular matters in the College, including curriculum revisions, new course proposals, catalog changes, and course deletions, among others. Terms of service of committee members are determined by department policies. 4.

Technology Committee

The technology committee is comprised of one faculty representative selected by each department in the College. The primary responsibilities of the technology committee are to research technology-related needs in the College and among its departments and to make recommendations to the dean for the allocation of student technology fees in the College as part of the university process for student technology fee allocation. Members of the technology committee serve staggered terms of 3 years and meet as needed or when called upon by the dean. 5.

Personnel Review Committee

The purpose of the college personnel review committee is to review the dossiers of and make recommendations to the dean regarding candidates for tenure and/or promotion and faculty undergoing post-tenure review. The committee will consist of one elected representative from each department in the College. Terms of service on the committee will be two years, with staggered expiration of terms when possible. In the event that no faculty member from a department meets these criteria, the department may elect a tenured associate professor to serve on the committee. During years when lecturers are reviewed, a senior lecturer (if available) will serve on the committee for those reviews. 6.

Student Advisory Board

The student advisory board of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is committed to supporting the CLASS mission statement by emphasizing excellence, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge. In concert with the dean, the board reports to an associate dean and acts as a liaison between the department and the dean’s office. The board focuses on recruitment, retention, progression, and advisement and supports the CLASS Undergraduate Research Symposium, held each spring semester. The board is made up of CLASS undergraduate majors from the departments and graduate majors from the Institute, with no more than two representatives per department. Members are chosen by their respective department chairs/director, by the dean, or by the associate dean. Undergraduate students may begin service as sophomores and remain on the board until graduation. The officers include a president and a president-elect.
