Current Wisconsin recycling laws ban polystyrene (Styrofoam) from disposal, but the DNR allows them to be placed in landfills or incinerated because recycling programs are not developed enough to enforce the ban.
ACH accepts #6 Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam plastic that is white, clean, dry and free of debris. This includes items such as insulated coolers or protective packaging for electronics, household goods, and toys. (ACH does not accept packing peanuts or extruded polystyrene containers such as cups, plates, takeout containers.)
In the future, if the DNR determines that recycling programs for polystyrene are adequately developed, then the law will be enforced.
For more information about their recycling program and the products they accept, please visit ACH’s website.
Polystyrene has serious health effects associated with it use and incineration, which include: irritation of the skin, eyes, upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal effects. Chronic exposure to polystyrene products can affect the central nervous system. Polystyrene is also classified as a possible human carcinogen by the EPA and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Packing Peanuts While packing peanuts are also made of polystyrene, they cannot be recycled the same as white sheets of polystyrene. One of the easiest ways to recycle packing peanuts is to contact your local packaging service such as UPS to see if they will accept them, as most stores typically do. To find additional places in Wisconsin that accepts packing peanuts, go to www.loosefillpackaging.com or call the Peanut Hotline at 800-828-2214.
