Paragraph of the Week Over the course of this week, you will be writing a paragraph. You will choose a topic (within the given parameters) and will brainstorm, draft, and write a complete paragraph. Be sure to use all that we have learned in class when writing this paragraph. So let’s get started!

Monday

Think about what it is like to be at the beach for one day. Brainstorm everything you would see, hear, taste, smell, and feel while you are at the beach. Even if you haven’t been there, what do you THINK it would be like. What would you do? What are some things that would be going on around you? Write down as many ideas as possible.

Paragraph of the Week Now that you have the topic of your paragraph, you will write the main body sentences. Be sure that they are all on topic, as this is the “meat and potatoes” of your thoughts.

Tuesday

Using the brainstorm you created yesterday, choose 3 of the most important things you would do while at the beach. They will become the three details about your time spent at the beach. Write a sentence for each. Then, write an explanation sentence for each. Use those descriptive details from your circle map to help you.

Detail One : _______________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Explanation : ______________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Detail Two : _______________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Explanation : ______________________________________________ __________________________________________________________

Detail Three : ______________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Explanation : ______________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ © S.Moorman, 2014 http://teachinginroom6.blogspot.com

Paragraph of the Week Topic sentences tell the reader exactly what you will discuss in your paragraph without giving away any of the details. Closing sentences sum up what you have already written. They are the “frame” for your paragraph.

Wednesday

Now that you have your details and explanations written, you must write a topic sentence and closing sentence. Remember, your topic sentence must let the reader know what you are going to talk about in your paragraph, without discussing any of the details. Your closing sentence must restate your topic sentence, using synonyms and different words.

Topic Sentence : ___________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________

Closing Sentence : __________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________

Paragraph of the Week A paragraph talks about one topic, with many sentences all supporting that topic. This is the when you will construct that paragraph.

Thursday

It is time to put all of your work together in the form of a paragraph. The topic sentence goes first, followed by the detail/explanation combo sentences. The last sentence is your closing sentence.

Reread it all and make sure it makes sense. It should all be about the same topic, give lots of information, and be written in complete sentences.

A Day at the Beach

Thank you so much for downloading this free week-long sample of the Paragraph of the Week. This is a program that I truly believe in and feel has helped my students to master the structure of paragraph writing, while becoming better writers. But what is Paragraph of the Week year long program? It is a DAILY, SCAFFOLDED approach to paragraph writing. There are 36 weeks of writing prompts, all of which will result in your students writing a paragraph in one week. The prompts are easy for the students to grasp (mostly about their favorite subject….themselves!) so that the focus is on the writing, and not necessarily the topic.

There are samples for the teacher and students, as well as rubrics. The program also changes from a scaffolded approach focused on structure, to a bit more focus on revision in the latter half of the year. It really is one of my favorite things about my classroom.

You can find the full Paragraph of the Week program in my TpT store at http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pa ragraph-of-the-Week-404094.
