POZZO SACRO SANT' ANASTASIA, Sacred Well in Sardinia, Italy Borut Juvanec* Water is crucial to life. Sacral objects connected with water are well-known in architecture, dating back to Egyptian times. A well is a necessity, life without water is impossible. Wells and water are a normal part of vernacular architecture. The Egyptians used wells as instruments for measuring the Nile's flood (a bigger flood meant a wider flooded area, more fertile fields, a bigger crop and more food), as well as for sacral purposes, for purifying priests before a ceremony. The Nuraghe culture, not very much younger than the Egyptians, had many wells on Sardinia, mostly for sacral use. Centuries later, there was the high culture of tranquil water in Spain (Granada), and fountains of water played an important part in the baroque architecture of Europe. There is an important sense of liquid in Catholicism: wine for the priests and water for other people. Holy water, of course. On the island of Sardinia, several wells can be found dating from the second and first millennium, on the surface and underground. Sant' Anastasia in Sardara is the most interesting. There is nothing exceptional to see at first glance in Sardara. The sacred well is there but actually just a hole in the ground, and a stone staircase. Physics is very complicated in theory, but its practice can be easily understood: if experts show the way. Effect: a miracle is shown by the functioning of this ancient building. The sun enters the well through the staircase, and exits through a small hole. The sun coming from underworld, from the earth, is undoubtedly a miracle. And if it happens on the name day of the patroness of the church, it cannot be hazard or coincidence. The people of that time knew this miracle, and I am sure they used it; as is also demonstrated by the name itself: Anastasia comes from Greek 'anastasis' or resurrection (something that rises: the beam rises from the black hole). The sacred well (pozzo sacro) Sant'Anastasia is a perfect example of the use of technical theory to achieve power over people. A greater miracle means many more visitors, much more money, more power, including political. Today, with all the computers and all the wisdom of science, we have forgotten this. We know the theory but not the practice and the wisdom of our predecessors. The project: explanation, education, workshop, organization of an event (performance), exploitation are needed. A great deal of expert work is required, but the results can be published in both general and professional publications in order to educate a wide circle of people. A workshop for students from all over the world, together with a number of experts, can examine the evidence and make materials, sketches, drawings, computer presentations and simulations. The organization of an event would be a matter for the local authorities, but with oversight by professionals from the fields of history of art, anthropology, ethnology, architecture, archaeology, civil engineering and the economy, in order to ensure cultural, expert and commercial results. Culture is not just a matter for high society. With professional treatment, it can be much more valuable than we think. Key words: water, well, sacred well, stone, corbelling, Sun, sunbeam, miracle, reflection

1 In the middle of the old historical centre of Sardara, there is the pleasant small church of Sant' Anastasia. To the left of the doorway can be found an ancient sacred well dating from twelve hundred BC Pozzo sacro today When I came to Sardara for the first time, I was surprised by this small, pleasant and peaceful town in the middle of the island of Sardinia. Small, narrow roads lead to the historic centre with the church. Around the church, there is a plateau with historical remains. The main thing is a hole and staircase leading into the earth. Nothing more. Inside, an expert can recognise the corbelled construction of a false dome in the main room and, of course, stairs with the ceiling in real corbelling. On my first visit, the well water had already disappeared, but there was an electrical pump, with wires and pipes all over the whole well.

2 Entrance to the well with staircase and exit through a hole in the underground false dome of the well An expert can recognize one of the holy wells, or pozzi sacri, and they are monuments that are typical to Sardinia. I do not know of such interesting monument anywhere else. Ercole Cantu dated Pozzo sacro Sant' Anastasia to the 12th century BC (Contu 1999; Lilliu 2oo6: 69). Santa Cristina near Macomer is another monument of the same type. The stone cutting is essentially more expert, but it dates from the 8th century BC, four centuries later than Sardara. There are some thesys for built construction also over the today's base, on the surface. This is matter of some found topstones (Lilliu,E 2oo6 p.73), but I am not sure. It is a great pity not to show such an important monument to the public. However, this is a question for experts, and a matter for their work. The present article is merely my contribution.

3 The staircase and the roof use the same constructional principle: stepped construction, corbelling Theory: Physics Physical experiment in practice can be a pattern for some proofs of nature itself. The use of physics and high mathematical knowledge is familiar from megalith structures, from the Bronze and Iron Ages, about three or four thousand years ago. Practice in realization: the use of balance and lever in construction, a pulley for lifting heavy loads were the first elements in the construction of buildings. They helped achieve the impossible.

4 Practical view of the well: the church, on the left the hole, in the middle the staircase, all in perfect corbelling Theory in realization: the sun, for example, can be used for different cases: its position in the sky and the shadow or beam it casts on the earth. A drop of water on a water surface releases a radiation effect, circles around its centre. When talking about the sun and water, it is very important to realize that a water surface gives the same results as a mirror. The angle of incidence, for instance, is the same as the angle of retreat (a beam on a horizontal mirror surface). The course of the sun and moon has long been familiar to experts, who have been able to use this phenomenon for various purposes. Historically, of course, these things are not produced by ignorant people, and an object with clearly shown physical phenomenon is worth using; by its owners, by leaders. Some phenomena can be predicted, and can be explained to the unlearned masses as a miracle.

3

5 The theoretical system of a mirror (water) is based on a perpendicular vertical. Everything is symmetrical around this vertical. An incoming beam of light with angle α has the same exit angle (-α) in relation to the vertical Effect: a miracle This is a sophisticated idea in use: a physical phenomenon, such as a reflection in water, a sunbeam on a particular day, can be used as a miracle. The corbelled well, called 'pozzo sacro' or 'sacred well' Sant' Anastasia in Sardara, Sardinia, Italy has an entrance with a staircase with an exact south – north alignment. Twice a year, the sun shines on the water and sunbeam then exits through a small hole at the top of the well.

6 A triangle theoretically: the sun, brainpower, miracle. A triangle practically: the sun, mirror (water surface in darkness), the final result is a miracle The sun emerging from the black Earth can only be a miracle. The question is whether this well was constructed to use the beam on a particular day, or whether the beam came out on this day 'by chance', unplanned. It happens every April 19, the name day of the patroness of the well, Sant'Anastasia (sic! not in Sardara). The name Anastasia, though, comes from the word 'anastasis', in Greek resurrection or something that is rising. This cannot be chance; it is the use of wisdom and a knowledge of physics.

Cross section and way of the sunbeam (dr Domen Zupancic 2oo9)

Proof 1 The physical phenomenon of the light beam: an incoming beam on a mirror surface has the same angle as the outgoing beam. 2 This phenomenon can be observed every year on April 19. 3 April 20 is the name day of Saint Anastasia. A mistake has occurred in my measuring the stone construction, but it is less than one percent. There is another possible explanation: the top stones have moved over time. 4 Sant' Anastasia is the patron saint of the nearby church (built around two millennia later), clearly named after the pre-Christian sacral monument. 5 The name Anastasia has its origin in Greek 'anastasis': something that rises It means literally resurrection. (The New Testament Greek Lexicon, in: www.searchgodsword.org).

Groundplan: measurment of visible elements (Juvanec,B 1993)

The project The proposed work is as follows: sanation, revitalization, reconstruction, documentation, explanation, education, workshop, organization of event (performance); and it should be exploited culturally.

5

It is not question of money or economics, but of culture. All the local people should be aware of the reality of this monument, experts from abroad need to be informed of the unique features of this architecture and, if a cultural and commercial event can be organised at the same time, it is good for the local authorities, for the economy of the region, it is very important for all the people of Sardara and, last but not least, it is important for architecture itself.

10 Groundplan inside: circular well's cell and staircase, all in two squares (dr Domen Zupancic 2oo9) Sanation and revitalization: it is very important to understand that sanation and revitalization are very important: there are some ideas of preserving the well in a technical sense only, but interesting reconstructions (Contu, E 1999) are important for understanding pozzi sacri as a whole.

11 The well inside: circular pit and the staircase. In the plane there are two squares, in space two cubes (Juvanec,B 1993 p.19)

6

However, as architects, we have of course to do something. My proposal for Project Sardara are as follows: Explanation: documentation, analysis and professional work can help spread knowledge for public use. It is hard work, but it can help us to discover more and more monuments with similar effects. It is more important because of corbelled constructions on pastures, called pineta (B. Juvanec 1995, 2oo3: Pineta on Sardinia, Documentation) as modest but clever examples of the vernacular architecture of Europe (Juvanec,B 1995 and 2oo5; Zupancic 2oo3). There is a small but very good museum in Sardara (it is the first time that I have seen a museum for blind people). At least one wall, or even a room, could be dedicated to this sacred well: with a short textual explanation, basic drawings and sketches, schematic diagrams, even with a computer simulation of its functioning. A computer simulation would be the most comprehensive way of showing the miracle itself. A small leaflet, as well as a more comprehensive publication, can provide important information for school pupils and other members of the public. Not only pozzi sacri are important for explaining Sardinia's culture: all the objects of the Nuraghe culture should be presented in one place on a map (with GPS data) and with photos (if there are no drawings). The stone shelters called 'pinetas' are a special problem. They are neglected and overlooked throughout the Mediterranean area. However, they are an important part of Sardinia's culture of vernacular architecture. Education: the results of scientific and professional work need to be spread by every available means, from a local level up to full scientific treatment: in local newspapers and in professional journals, through the publication of brochures, leaflets and books; on radio and television; in schools and universities, via the internet and computer simulations etc. Computer games with educational effects could be best for young visitors. They can be made interesting from the points of view of physics, computer sciences, culturology, history, architecture, even mathematics. A good computer game is not boring, but can be made extremely entertaining. Workshops as the result of joint work, in which local students and students from elsewhere in the world, and both Sardinian experts and professional from other European countries, could take part. Workshops can prove the hypothesis with computer simulation in practice. Workshops can spread knowledge about rare phenomenon to other countries and can combine the knowledge of foreign professionals from all possible fields. As the first step, the University of Cagliari and Ljubljana University, Slovenia, would cooperate with the Sardinian local authority.

12 Sacred well and miracle at the church: a bigger miracle - a bigger crowd of people - more money – more economic power (legal force) - power over the people. Borut Juvanec for the Rai TV station 2oo3.

7

Workshops can reanimate physical phenomenon in practice with provisional constructions in place. Workshops can provide an example for similar work on monuments of the ancient world elsewhere in Europe, with possible future results relating to the miracle in Sardara. International workshops could collect information about other wells in the world (each foreign delegation to a workshop could bring new information), a review of all the Nuraghe pozzi in Sardinia could be extremely important for work elsewhere in Europe. Newspapers and professional journals would be important for the further work of workshops, ideas for publishing, organization of events at the well, souvenirs, actions in place, presentation of Sardara in foreign countries etc. As an example: a wooden or plaster model with an exact mirror effect could be a very attractive, educational and cultural souvenir of Sardara. All these actions could also be given a sacral context. Pozzo sacro is located in the churchyard, and is also connected by the name.

13 Ground plan: technical drawing is needed as a basis for all further work: for maintenance, repair, sanation, presentation. The first step is terrain work in place. The organization of an event (performance) is suggested not just for economic reasons but because culture and tourism have a synergetic effect: cultural tourism is wider and more efficient than tourism in itself. The main thing here is the initiative of the local authorities, which need to understand all the possibilities for the use of proposed project. Organization has two levels: professional and practical. Experts know their work. Practical organization involves the organization of the event itself (twice a year, perhaps for a week with both sacral and cultural programme open to the public) with everything necessary both at the site and in the surroundings of Sardara (organisation of the performance itself, including staff, publishing and media work, hotels, transport, advertising etc). There is also a question of the number of participants at the event. However, a large number of spectators cannot be a major problem if culture is the point. On the other hand, a limited number of visitors could raise the value of the event. The performance can also be initiated by technical means, for everyday use, and it is not expensive. A major event celebrating the name day of Sant' Anastasia once a year, with the ancient miracle, could be an event of an international character, for several professions and in terms of tourism. It would, of course, need a major financial effort initially, but only at the start. Cultural tourism is not a one-day affair, and thus could be important for the whole island of Sardinia and for Italy.

8

The sacred well is so unique in European culture that the European Union should recognize it as an essential part of its culture, important for the whole of European architecture, for the European people, not just in terms of culture but also for its contribution to the local economy. The work of scientists is not only discovery, understanding, treatment and publication, the practical result of theoretical work is much more important and has a wider impact. The idea of pozzo sacro itself needs to be used by local government. The next step is for the local authorities to take.
