Korean writing is called Hangul. Seollal in hangul is made up of 6 characters. This makes the “s” sound

This character is for the “n” sound

Then “eo” like a in awe

And “a” like the a in father

And this one says “l”

Make “l” one more time!

When you put them all together it sounds like Seollal. The “n” sound changes to an “l”.

Make a sam taeguk - Korean fan! Print this page on cardstock or heavy paper. Or you can glue this template to some cardboard. Color it yellow, blue, and red. These three colors represent humanity, heaven, and earth. Use a popsicle stick or chopstick and tape it to the back to complete your fan!

Play yutnori! This is a simple version of the traditional game - perfect for kids! You will need: Ÿ 4 popsicle sticks or strips of hard cardboard Ÿ Buttons, coins, or a place marker for each player Label one side of each stick with a mark - you can color it or write “yutnori” on it. The other side should be blank. The bottom left circle of the board is “home” (the circle that is filled in). Your goal is to go all the way around the board and get back home before the other players. Ÿ If you land on a corner space (the circles) you can change your direction next turn - that means you can go diagonally through the middle as a short cut! Ÿ Two players cannot be on the same space at the same time! If you land on someone else’s spot you must start back at the beginning. To move: gently throw your sticks up in the air. When they land, count up the number of blank sides facing up. You move that many number of spaces. If you get no blank sides (all tops), you move 5 spaces! The person who gets home first wins!
