With an aim to provide an eco-friendly solution to the unsolved problem of disposing kitchen waste, an innovator from Kerala has designed a compact, kitchen biogas plant and waste disposal plant, to help decompose biodegradable food waste and produce biogas for cooking purpose. "Biodegradable waste disposal from 25 per cent kitchens in the world is nearly 300 billion kgs a year, out of which we can make 150 billion cubic meter biogas. The use of biogas plants in these kitchens will mean a saving of 150 billion kgs of LPG or 210 billion liters of kerosene, or 510 billion kg of charcoal, or 1220 billion kgs of wood. The thermal value of the above mentioned biogas is one billion megawatt," says Rajesh TR, the innovator. Besides, we can avoid millions of plastic carry bags used for the disposal of waste and it also reduces the emission of billions of cubic meters of carbon dioxide. But there are many deterrents to using the existing biogas plants for many, including high investment needed, adds Rajesh. The innovation, namely Biokitch, has three chambers – for digestion, filtering and storage of gas to dispose kitchen waste and generate biogas. This system, Rajesh claims, is the simplest way of disposal of waste for houses, hotels and offices. This product is attached with water level indicator, gas level indicator and flame traps and all safety requirements. The innovator has registered his innovation with the National Innovation Foundation and has applied for patent. Biogas is an organic gas refers to methane produced by fermentation of organic matter including food waste, waste water sledge, municipal solid waste or any other bio-degradable feed stock, under anaerobic conditions.
