A Note From The Director I fell in love with this wickedly funny play when I found myself laughing and groaning at the same time— recognizing our cultural biases in these brilliantly drawn characters and their well-meaning but often misguided words. Act One gives a glimpse into history, a “Way We Were” kind of situation that reminds us of our social constraints and issues in 1959; Act Two brings us up to date with a vengeance, drawing parallels with the past and showing how far we’ve come—or not! Norris skewers society in all the right places, making us think hard about our own shortcomings, yet delivering a rollicking zinger of a play while doing it. It’s big, it’s epic, it’s funny as hell—and also oh-so familiar… Enjoy!

A Note From The Artistic Director Welcome to CLYBOURNE PARK, the second production of our 85th Anniversary season, lovingly dubbed “Our Tony-est Season Yet!” We’re thrilled to have you here! I hope you’ve buckled your seatbelts, because you’re in for a devilishly funny, jarring, insightful, and, mostlikely, (slightly) uncomfortably familiar ride. CLYBOURNE PARK is everything you hope for in a play: relatable, extremely well crafted, entertaining, and provocative, which explains why it won every major theatrical award, including the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and is one of the most sought after plays in the regional theater circuit. I have no doubt you will recognize these characters in yourselves and your neighbors, because even though the setting is in a Chicago neighborhood, it could very well be anywhere in the Bay Area, especially in our beloved Palo Alto! Our fantastic director Jeanie Smith has assembled an absolute all-star cast to bring you this wonderful production. They are a cohesive group that has dedicated itself to presenting the story authentically, carefully, and collaboratively. They are all excellent people outside of the world of the play, which makes us love and despise their characters even more. But beyond the cast of players, you will not see tonight the other 22 local people off stage that have worked tirelessly to make this show happen. Each brings their own flavor to this theatrical salsa, and this one has turned out especially delicious! We are proud to continue to support local theatrical career development, and continue to purchase and rent the majority of our materials used in this production from local vendors. We have the show, and we have the talent, but there is one other critical aspect to our ability to continually produce live theater by and for our community for 85 years… YOU. I can’t thank you enough for your support of our company and our productions. As we enter this season of giving, I want to personally encourage you to continue to support Palo Alto Players with a tax-deductible contribution. Gifts of any amount are appreciated and specifically fund the high-quality productions you see on our stage. We can't do it without you!
