Project 6a, Lathe or Wood Pen Design and Construction
Objectives: 1. Students will be introduced to basic design components that include sketching, revising, and modeling. 2. Students will select lumber and other materials that complement their design. 3. To develop an understanding of and an appreciation for the importance of accepting individual responsibility, developing a solid work ethic and learning to plan and work safely in order to succeed in our technological society. 4. Develop an appreciation of the relationship between technology and academic areas, discovering potential, creativity and talent.
Strategies: 1. The major component of this project is problem solving. Since each student is working on an original design each student will encounter a unique set of problems. 2. Creating an original design will be difficult for some students. The project is divided into various smaller steps to make the project less daunting. 3. Problem solving is the principle method of delivery with this instructorselected project. Special Safety Instructions 1. Students must obtain permission from Mr. Grube before using any power equipment.
Schedule
1. The design portion of this project will overlap the completion of the previous project 2. Once the design is complete, the student will be given an estimate of the time it should take to complete their clock. The average clock takes about 2-3 weeks to complete. Since some designs are more difficult that others, not all students will complete their clock at the same time. During this project, students may work on other smaller projects. This will allow students who have simpler designs to achieve the same grade. 3. This project is used for Design & Creation Students as well as Introductory students. D&C students will be expected to complete the design work outside of class and Intro students will be given class time to work on designs. The design expectations are not the same for Intro and D&C students.
Evaluation 1. The clock design is worth 10% of the term grade and the clock is 25% of the term grade. 2. The grading criteria for the clock include balance, accuracy, joinery, curved pieces, clock installations, hour markers, sanding, finish, and complexity.
Project Cost 1. There is no cost associated with the clock design. 2. The average student spends about $4 - $10 for the wood. The quartz clock mechanism is available through Pinkerton for $5.00. Some students, purchase additional materials outside of Pinkerton, but this is not required.
