PROMYS PROMYS connects Asian American, African American, and other youth and young adults of color from Chicago’s Southside communities to researchers from three of our city’s leading universities—University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Chicago State University. By fostering connections between high school youth, undergraduate students, and renowned researchers, PROMYS introduces young people to exciting STEM careers on the frontline of health research for diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and Hepatitis B. Through this work, we hope to increase the number of Asian Americans, African Americans, and students of color as leaders in STEM fields as we improve health outcomes and achieve health equity for all communities.
High School Scientists High school students, selected from public schools across Chicago’s Southside communities, will learn the fundamentals of scientific research, as they work in small teams with other high school students, college students, and researchers. Through an 8-week intensive program, they will learn critical thinking skills, problem solving, team work, and research methods, which they will then have the chance to apply as they work within two different research teams over the summer. High school students will also volunteer with Asian Health Coalition to explore community health initiatives as well as participating in career treks to companies involved in innovative health research. 8 week program 12 hours/week program 3 classroom hours + 9 research/community/career trek hours $1,000 stipend for all high school scholars selected
This program was made possible by the Telligen Community Initiative.
