Materials: ● Small sauce pans ● 6 eggs ● 2 mixing bowls ● Candy thermometer ● Powdered milk ● Cookie sheet ● Aluminum foil ● Hair ● Toaster oven

Procedure: 1. Separate egg whites and place it in a saucepan 2. Place thermometer in and gently heat until cook. Record temperature. 3. Make milk according to powdered milk instructions. Place milk in a saucepan. 4. 6) Gently heat the milk. Record the temperature in which there is a texture change/a skin forms. 5. 8) Cover a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and place hair on it. 6. 9) Preheat the oven to 200 degrees for 10 minutes. Afterwards, place pan in oven and let bake for 15 minutes. 7. Take out pan and inspect hair. 8. Repeat steps 1-7 two more times.

What is Protein Denaturation?

Protein molecules serve many different functions in our bodies, from defense to structure and transportation of other molecules. There are many types of proteins, like keratin in a person’s nails, myosin and actin in their muscles, and collagen in their tendons. It is their protein structure, the shape of the protein, which determines what kind of job that specific protein. Denaturation of the protein can be caused by a variety of factors, including a change in pH levels, change in salt concentrations, change in temperature levels, and the presence of reducing agents.

Protein Casein

Social Studies Component One of the major ways denaturation takes place is our lives is in the detergent we use to clean our clothes. As an industry worth $202.5 billion, some detergents can denature the proteins latching onto one’s clothes, causing the stains to stay. By replacing the bonds between the fabric and protein, detergents can easily force the two apart and therefore getting rid of stains. Stain on Clothes

ELA component Choosing denaturation of proteins came very naturally as my first idea. The inspiration into researching this topic came from my interest in how denaturing proteins takes a part in our very daily lives. How would things be different without denaturing proteins? Why do we cook the foods that we eat? These driving questions drove me to wonder more and more about their structure and how they work, and therefore led me to this research.

Harmony STEM SOS STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM Education is studying in these fields. These fields are the essentials in being successful in the modern world of technology. As time progresses, we see such fields more and more often. STEMSOS is a rigorous, interdisciplinary, standards-focused, and engaging STEM teaching approach that is teacher-facilitated, student-centered and directed through sets of project- and inquiry-based (P&IBL) projects. STEMSOS PBL approach is to maintain the focus on standards-based teaching while enriching and extending the learning of students through PBL projects. The goal is to promote not only collaborative skills and student ownership of learning but also to promote student success in state and national standards.
