In this 4-day adventure you will experience the magic of the Island of Chiloe and its feel of going back in time into a timeless culture run by wooden artifacts, tides, mythology and a sense of island, unique in the world. Both nature and culture blend in this adventure where we will be able to understand why this island was the last stronghold of the Spanish empire, has a unique cuisine and, even today, is so different to anyplace else in Chile. Welcome to Chiloé. – This excursion begins at 09:00 am from Puerto Varas where we will depart towards the ferry that will cross us to the island of Chiloe. We will drive through the quaint village of Chacao towards Ancud, the second largest city on the island. We will visit the Fundacion Amigos de las Iglesias de Chiloe, foundation which is in charge of the restoration of the wooden churches, 16 of which have been declared World Heritage by Unesco. We will continue towards the Pacific Coast to enjoy a farm lunch at an agrotourism which has been certified by SIPAM (GIAHS, Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) recognized by FAO because of its agricultural and organic value unique on the island. After lunch we will continue to the Natural Monument of Puñihuil, only place in the world where Humboldt and Magellanic penguins nest side by side. After we sail to the islets where penguins nest sharing their habitat with cormorants, wild geese and other fauna we will continue to Cecilia’s organic farm to see how potatoes and garlic are grown organically on a farm considered a model of agriculture on the island. We will continue to a Kayaking Eco-lodge in the Valley of Chepu where we will have a safety briefing on kayaking and the river before enjoying dinner prepared by our hosts. After dinner we will go to rest since the next day we have an early start. (private transportation, bilingual guide, lunch*, dinner, lodging, all activities, and admissions) Day 2. Kayak @ Dawn, East Coast and Castro. - We will start this day before dawn getting on our kayaks and paddling up river into the sunken forest, silent witness of the 1960 earthquake and tsunami, the biggest one ever register by man. 9.5 in the Richter scale. When the first sunrays awaken nature we will head back to the Eco-lodge for a proper breakfast to continue
to the East coast of the island where most of the wooden churches where built visiting some of the most emblematic before we get on a boat towards the island of Mechuque in the archipelago. We will enjoy lunch on this island where it seems time stopped 100 years ago and life is run by tide changes. We will return to the main island of Chiloe Grande towards its capital, Castro, bustling economic center with its iconic stilt houses (palafitos) and the Church os San Francisco, a masterpiece in local woods. Finally we will head to Cucao, southern entrance to the Chiloe National Park where the team of Tantauco Park (largest and most pristine park on the island with over 150 kms. (90 miles) of trekking trails) will host a dinner for us. Lodging in Cucao at Parador Darwin and/or Palafito Cucao Hostel. (private transportation, bilingual guide, breakfast, lunch*, dinner, lodging, all activities, and admissions) Day 3. Chiloe National Park, Castro Fjord and Rilan Peninsula. - After a hearty breakfast we will trek for about 4 hours towards the Muelle de las Almas on the Pacific Coast. Back at the National Park we will enjoy a buffet lunch with the freshest produce from the land and sea. In the afternoon we will head back to the Port of Castro and get on the Mar y Magia catamaran from where we will have a view of the city from the sea and cross towards the Rilan peninsula where high-end hotels have been built taking tourism on the island to the next step. Dinner with live folkloric music will be served at the hotel and get a well deserved rest. Hand Craft Market and Goodbye Chiloé. - Breakfast will be served at the hotel before we head to the town of Dalcahue famous for its handicrafts and home to a UNESCO church under restoration. A reception at the local cookeries will be served before we head to the Mocopulli airport to take a flight back to Puerto Montt where guests will be transferred to Puerto Varas.
