Radiation Zone What to do in the event of a Nuclear Catastrophe
A nuclear catastrophe (such as a nuclear power plant containment failure or a nuclear weapon detonation) leads to the contamination of an area with harmful ionizing radiation. Should you find yourself in such a situation, here is what scientists say can be done to minimize your exposure and save your life. Of course, the chances are slim that such an emergency will occur, but as is the case with most potential dangers, knowledge is power. 1.
Remain Calm.
2.
Pay attention to sirens, announcements or instructions from local officials. Follow the Emergency Alert System instructions on cell phones, radios or televisions carefully.
3.
Minimize your exposure to contamination by increasing the distance and number of obstacles between you and the source of the radiation. This could be evacuation or remaining indoors to minimize exposure. If advised to do so, head to the nearest large building (preferably concrete or brick) and try to go as far underground as possible to a windowless room, putting as many walls and layers of concrete and other strong building materials between you and the outdoors. Turn off the air conditioner, ventilation fans, furnace and other air intakes. Expect to stay inside for at least 24 hours.
4.
If you are told to evacuate, keep car windows and vents closed; use re-circulating air.
5.
Do not use the telephone or make cell phone calls unless absolutely necessary.
6.
Stay out of the incident zone. Most radiation loses its strength fairly quickly. Going outside to find family or friends will lead to deadly levels of exposure.
7.
If possible, shower using lots of soap, but do not scratch or scrub the skin. Place your clothes into a thick plastic bag and leave it in an out-of-the-way place where it will not come into contact with people or animals.
8.
Keep food in covered containers or in the refrigerator. Food not previously covered should be washed before being put in to containers.
