Bounded understanding and informed trust: How laypersons cope with science-based expert knowledge Due to the division of labor in modern societies we are all laypersons with regard to most domains of knowledge. We have to make science-related decisions (for example about health issues) based on our bounded understanding of science, that is, without having the deep and extensive understanding that is characteristic of domain experts. I will argue that we- as non-experts- have better capabilities for second-hand evaluation (whom to trust?) than for first-hand evaluation (what is true?). My arguments will be exemplified by results from our studies which focus on adults' capacities for the evaluation of science-based expert knowledge found in the Internet. Especially, I will discuss laypersons' capacities to understand how specialized knowledge is distributed (who knows what?) and also laypersons' capacities to understand conflicts among scientists.

Professor Rainer Bromme Rainer Bromme is Professor (Educational Psychology) at the Institute of Psychology, University of Münster, Germany. His previous affiliations include the Institute of Mathematics Education (a research institute on mathematics education) at the University of Bielefeld and the Department of Psychology at the University of Frankfurt (Main). His research addresses learning in formal and informal learning contexts, especially communication among experts and laypersons, Internet use and the Public Understanding of Science. At present he coordinates a DFG (German Science Foundation) funded research program on Science and the Public (http://www.scienceandthepublic. de). Furthermore he is PI within the DFG Graduate School “Trust and Communication in a Digitized World” (http://www.uni-muenster.de/GKVertrauen-Kommunikation/en/index.html)
