Teaching Comprehension Teaching students how to “think” can be a very complex and lengthy process. Through my work with students over the past 17 years, here is what has worked best for my students: 1. Model, model, model! The more you model your thinking and actions for your students, the quicker and better their understanding will be. 2. Guide your students! Don’t turn your students loose too soon to work all on their own. Guide them through the strategy. 3. Have you ever heard the term, Practice Makes Perfect? Well, your students may not learn to perfection, but practice makes a huge difference. Give your students independent practice time. 4. Ensure that you are providing your students with additional practice where they can use the strategy in AUTHENTIC reading situations. TeacherKarma.com

Infer: Use Clues and what I know to make sense of my reading.
Use what I know to understand the text better.
Question: Ask questions while reading.
Visualize:
Summarize:
Create mental images of what I am reading.
Determine which ideas are most important.
