f     o   s r a t S Crisis     ! t n e m e Manag

What is the S.S. P.U.S.S. and how does it apply to crisis management in libraries? •  •  •  •  •  •

S = Spin! S = Squirm! P = Panic! U = Untruths! S = Shout Down the Opposition! S = Say You Lost Documents or It’s Too Burdensome to Locate the Evidence! When crisis approaches, library boards and staff should sail on the S.S. PUSS as a mnemonic device to attack their critics, lie to the media, conceal damaging information, and distract the public. Never go down with the ship! Blame others for your mistakes and keep lying until people get tired of asking questions!

SPIN! If a library board is criticized for anything bad it did, you should spin the situation to attack the board’s critics instead. •  Dig up dirt on your perceived enemies! •  The media is both stupid and inclined to take your side, so immediately find some way to paint your critics as devils who must be hated by the public (tell the media they are part of a Tea Party group because that always works!) •  If your critic is a female who is a parent and a Christian, paint her as a religious nut or as the second coming of Sarah Palin •  If your critic is a gay man ignore him because we don’t know how to effectively attack a gay man (yet) •  Claim that your critic is only interested in writing a book on you because of course the whole world has heard of you Remember that the media wants to help you, so always find ways to make it easy for reporters to help you!

SQUIRM! Always avoid talking about the actual dangers to children found in your library. Instead, put the focus on something else. •  The American Library Association (ALA) is here to help! •  The ALA will send you daily talking points that have nothing to do with the problems in your library but are field tested to trick the media into saying “this is a first amendment issue and the ALA knows best” •  Imply that anyone questioning you just hates the first amendment and is a book burner •  Repeat the useful lie that if a parent has a problem with anything that has happened in a library then the parent is just ignorant and maybe social services needs to take their kids away The American Library Association has spent the last twenty years working hard to make libraries immune to any criticism because all critics of libraries are painted as dangerous zealots!

PANIC! If you realize that your critics have uncovered a real problem in your library, hit the panic button and call for reinforcements immediately to destroy the opposition and scare away your detractors. •  The police are a useful tool to use against your enemies because people are afraid of the police •  Don’t worry about ever being charged with the crime of disorderly conduct for making false police reports •  The police will just do whatever you want because you are the library board and the police will jump when you tell them to because people believe a library board could not possibly be up to anything wrong •  Annihilate the opposition before it gains traction Never forget that you have a big psychological advantage in that most people have a default positive view of a library and they will help you and not your opponent at first!

Untruths! This is the preferred term for lying to the media in order to prevent damaging information about the library from being reported. •  If you repeat a lie enough times then people will just think it is true. •  Use a variety of lies in case ones you first told were not interesting enough to be reported in the paper. •  Don’t worry about reporters fact-checking you because they are on your side and will never report that you have lied to the public. •  The media will mostly publish your talking points in the paper so keep saying that nothing bad happened •  Always say “That’s a great question” whenever you are asked a question because that makes the reporter feel good for asking such a smart question. Then answer the question with a lie. Remember that most reporters today have a very strong bias in favor of the ideological left and that most news editors will not allow any stories that damage the Left in any way, shape, or form!

Shout Down the Opposition! If the public or the media start to realize you have been lying, pivot your tactics to shouting down the opposition and denying your critics the opportunity to question or challenge you. •  •  •  •  •

Don’t let your critics challenge you in public! Shut them up any way that you can! If you can not scare them away then threaten them. If they will not be threatened, remove their ability to speak! Always count on the media looking the other way because you are a government body and the media now exists to protect elected bodies •  Break any laws your lawyers tell you to break because chances are your opposition will either get bored or will not have the resources to take you to court for violating first amendment rights. If you ever took your ball away and stomped home when you were a child and did not get your way, remember to do this as an adult if a crisis is not being managed to your liking.

Say You Lost Documents or It’s Too Burdensome to Locate Evidence! If any document requested via the Freedom of Information Act is damaging or embarrassing to you, then you should lose that document or say it is too burdensome to look for it. •  Only willingly produce documents that make you look good. •  If a document is damaging, hide it. •  If you know you will be embarrassed by documents, just refuse to produce them and take the chance the opposition won’t go to the Attorney General to compel production. •  The AG has no teeth, really, so also take the chance that the opposition won’t take you to court and sue you for noncompliance! Remember the “Weimar Rule”: if it makes you look bad then it’s bad if you don’t make it disappear. Also, the “Bittman Corollary”: if you need a document to exist to prove you aren’t lying, then just fabricate it.

Key Lessons: * Children are not our priority. Our priorities are ideological. •  Find a law firm that has no scruples and just wants lots of billable hours and is willing to lie to the Attorney General and the media. You will need lawyers at some point to lie for you so pick willing idiots ahead of time. •  You need a board led by either an incompetent idiot or someone too meek and mousy to overrule you as library director. •  The ALA will supply money, warm bodies, and any kind of statement you want to help you tell whatever lie you need. Don’t hesitate to call them! •  The most important thing is to keep the access to child porn and other dangerous things in the libraries because this is part of making libraries “transformational” and alienating children from their parents. •  Honor the ghost of Judith Krug, who spent her life making libraries dangerous places for children and who advocated for librarians to become social activists seeking to transform the country by transforming our communities.
