Recruiting Editors for 2009-2010 Public Knowledge, the newly created student journal at Virginia Tech, is looking for editorial staff members to serve on their 2009-2010 editorial board.
What is Public Knowledge? Public Knowledge is an interdisciplinary, student-run electronic journal hosted by the Center for Digital Discourse and Culture at VT. As an electronic journal, Public Knowledge uses a variety of communication technologies to create a sustained conversation about the questions and topics raised. Issues contain scholarly refereed articles as well as book reviews, essays, interviews, and other works utilizing a variety of media. Our first issue was published April 2009. Two issues will be published in the 2009-2010 school year.
Join Our Editorial Board Public Knowledge seeks Virginia Tech graduate students from across the university to fill the following positions on the editorial board: • Editor-in-Chief • Book Review Editor (to work with the current Editor-in-Chief) • Layout Editor • Copyeditor The Journal additionally seeks students interested in serving as Reviewers to participate in the double-blind peer review process of the journal. A separate call for reviewers will be forthcoming.

Positions are open to both doctoral and master’s students currently in good standing at VT. Please see the following page for a description of the positions. Applications are encouraged from students at all Virginia Tech campuses. The editorial board meets virtually to facilitate interaction across geographic distances. The Editorial Board will operate the journal and work with the Advisory Board comprised of faculty members from various disciplines. Currently this is an entirely volunteer effort with no remuneration and/or credit hours for serving on the Board.

Editorial Board Recruitment 2009-2010 Editor(s)-in-Chief There shall be at least one, up to two, Editor(s)-in-Chief. They are primarily responsible for ensuring that well-reasoned and appropriate final decisions are made regarding the editorial aspects of the Journal. Managerial duties are shared with the Journal Manager. Editor(s)-in-Chief also ensure the effective running of Public Knowledge with at least one Editor(s)-in-Chief being present at each Editorial, Reviewer, or Advisory Board meeting. Experience in leadership positions of student organizations and/or journal publications is preferred. One-year renewable term. Estimated Volunteer Time: 10-15 hours per week Copyeditor The primary responsibility of the Copyeditor is to ensure that each issue of the Journal is technically and stylistically correct according to text and citation rules. The Copyeditor is also responsible for training the Section Editors and Reviewers in proper submission form. Additionally, the Copyeditor collaborates with the Layout Editor on the journal layout and submitting proofs to the entire staff for final check, gives the Section Editors and Reviewers concrete dates for article submissions to allow for semi-annual publications, and provides key input on length of journal and general design. Knowledge of APA publication style is required. One-year renewable term. Estimated Volunteer Time: 5-10 hours per week Section Editor – Book Review Editor The primary responsibilities of the Book Review Editor are solicitation of book reviews and essays, development of student article themes or topics in coordination with the Editorial and Advisory Board, and initial review of book reviews submitted for publication. Experience reading and writing scholarly book reviews is preferred. One-year renewable term. Estimated Volunteer Time: 5-10 hours per week Layout Editor The Layout Editor is primarily responsible for the Journal's online management. He or she is the journal's expert on computers and, as such, has the responsibility of transferring accepted manuscripts to the website, communicating with contributors on matters related to acceptable electronic methods for transmitting manuscript data, maintaining the security and integrity of the website, and implementing changes to the site as approved by the Board. He or she shall update and maintain the Journal's website and work as a liaison between Public Knowledge and the current site host. Knowledge and experience with website design and computing languages (CSS, html) is required. One-year renewable term. Estimated Volunteer Time: 5-10 hours per week
