The second winter homecoming for Alliance was a big success. The junior class put a lot of effort into making an elaborate masquerade ball for the students. The event was a fund-raiser for the junior-senior prom.

When the Aviators varsity basketball team beat rival Marlington with a final score of 6349, it gave the boys a 16-0 record. A few games earlier, their winning streak earned them a third-place ranking in the state. But their new status did not go to their heads. With half the season still ahead, they knew they were going to have to work

even harder. Getting to 13-0 wasn’t easy. The first big battle came early in the season with a game against Division 1 powerhouse Austin Fitch. It took three overtimes and senior Sam Cundiff knocking down some threes before the Aviators won 84 to 81. The next epic battle came a couple of games later against cross-town rival Marlington. The Aviators had a great scoring streak, ending the half up by 10. Then the Dukes started fighting back hard before the Aviators finally pulled away, winning 69-66. When the Aviators beat rivals West Branch and Louisville, the games were almost complete blowouts. The Flyers prevailed over conference teams like Canton South, Minerva, Carrollton and Salem, and some non-conference teams like Canfield, Tuslaw, Garaway and Kirtland, who the Aviators played at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Some of the decorations included four foot decorative masks, twinkle lights and a load of multicolored balloons. The decorative masks were made by members of the junior class who came in on Saturdays and used tools borrowed from Mr. Smith’s auto body program. Aside from the great decorations, there were also plenty of

snacks. Students enjoyed cupcakes, an assortment of cookies, and punch from a fountain that was back by popular request. All refreshments were provided by the junior class parents. The attire for the dance was semi-formal/casual. Each student will be given a decorative Dance See Page 2

This year, spirit week happened not once, but twice. To honor winter athletes and celebrate the Winter Homecoming game against rival Marlington, students participated in theme days and ended the week with a pep assembly. Monday was mix-and-match/ backwards day. “This was a fun day that allowed students to participate

without having to spend money on costumes,” said Mrs. Casey Jenkins, who helped organize spirit days and the assembly. Tuesday was multiplicity day - just like twin day, but the point was to match as many other students as possible. On Wednesday, students broke out the cowboy boots and overalls and blacked-out their teeth to observe cowboy/hillbilly day. Thursday was designated Pep See Page 3

About half the student body was in attendance when members of the Drama Club presented their first play, “Hello Shakespeare,” on Jan. 12. The Drama Club is part of the Pilots after-school program and has drawn nine faithful actors and actresses who meet and practice every week. Mr. Dave Hammers is the adviser. Members of the club are planning another play for the spring and are investigating three plays as possibilities: “Miss Polly’s Institute for Criminally Damaged Young Ladies Puts on a Show,” “The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza” or “The SuessOdyssey,” all written by Don Zolidis as comedic versions of famous stories, Hammers said. “In the meantime, the club will actually be helping the middle school drama club with their spring production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ ” he said. “They will Drama See Page 2

It is considered one of the top tournaments in the Midwest. “I wrestled aggressive and took shots,” Jones said of his performance. “Brenton wrestled the way he is suppose to wrestle,” said Varsity Coach Craig Shaw. “It was the best he has wrestled all year.” “I expect this level of performance every day from Brenton, and this time he came up big.” Shaw was also pleased that two other wrestlers advanced to respectable finishes in the tournament. By TARALYN PETE The RAB Ms. Carrie Chunat made her directing debut at the high school with “Little Shop of Horrors,” which was a big hit. This year, she hopes to top it with “Singing in the Rain.” The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 22; Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24. There will also be a matinee on Sunday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m. “This show is so entertaining to watch that I knew it would be a hit at Alliance,” Chunat said. Not only does the show have a great script and wonderful music, but also features entertaining dance numbers. “The dancing will be a challenge, but I think my students will really grow from it,” she said. The show will be new to everyone, not only the cast but the director as well. It will mean a lot of hard work and practice. Chunat hopes there is not a repeat of last year’s interruptions to the rehearsal schedule. “I’m nervous about snow days,” she admitted. “Last year Drama from page 1 Zandra Baldwin, a junior who played Thisby in the play, said that she joined Drama Club because it seemed like an interesting new thing to try. “I really like it because it keeps my mind off drama, focused on what I need know, and keeps my head straight,” said Baldwin. “Honestly, it’s something to commit to” said Brittany Micited to dance with Uriel again,” joked senior Jimmy Neff. Junior Zandra Baldwin remembered the fun she had at last year’s dance, “and hopefully we will have lots of fun this time, too,” she said. “I think it will be fun because it’s more casual and everyone seems really excited about it,” said Caroline Zurbrugg, a senior. “It will be a night for memories,” said freshman Drue Hagan.

There are four leads in the show: The dramatic male lead (Don Lockwood) will be played by Seth McConnell, while the dramatic female lead (Kathy Selden) will be Julia Dubaj, Comic male lead (Cosmo Brown) is Adam Davis, and comic female lead (Lina Lamount) is Paige Felger. “I’m most excited to see the crowd’s reaction to my character, Lina,” said Paige. “I can’t wait to dance around in the rain,” said Seth, a junior, adding that he was excited about having the leading role. “I’m really excited to tap dance,” said Julia, noting the choreography that will be incorporated into the musical. Sam Cundiff, a longrange sharpshooter, averaged 5.9 points per game and a 40.5 percent 3-point average. Taurice Scott, who goes nuts for rebounds, was averaging 4.7 rebounds per game - the same as Kordelle Phillips. After their 12th win, the Aviators were averaging 69.2 points per game while their opponents were only averaging 54.1 points against them. Even with their great record, the boys were still looking for ways to improve. Coach Kukura said they still needed to work on their man-to-man defence and their free throws, and to cut out careless turnovers. Kukura said this year, he has tried to keep strategies simple and the mood upbeat. He said the team has good chemistry, which makes them enjoy their time together, both on and off the floor. So, come out and watch this amazing team as they battle to be No. 1. There’s something special happening on the hardwood.

“One Amazing Thing”

Students participate in One Book, One Community

By MADISON LYTLE The RAB What would you do if you were suddenly trapped with nine other people in the basement of a building following an earthquake? In “One Amazing Thing,” nine strangers face the terror of being trapped in the slowlyflooding office of the Indian consulate, not knowing if the outcome will be life or death. To pass time, and to keep up morale, the characters each tell a story about one amazing thing that happened in their lives. The stories revealed disintegrating relationships, love affairs, fear and tragedy, but also courage, determination and resourcefulness.

The book, by Chitra Divakaruni, was chosen for the One Book, One Community program. The author will give a presentation March 22 at 7 p.m. at Mount Union Theater and will visit area schools to talk to students the following day. Many students and faculty members are reading the book, according to Mr. Chris Schillig, chairman of the English Department. Like the characters, each reader brings a different perspective to the book. Ms. Marilyn Yingst, librarian, said she was surprised that the author did not dwell on the gory details of the earthquake and instead focused on the characters and their stories. “I pictured the earthquake as being much scarier than the way she depicted it,” she said. “This book features a diverse group of characters, all of whom have stories to tell that are unique and fascinating to read,” said Jensine Lin, who is reading the book in Schillig’s AP Literature class. “All the characters represented different backgrounds, which I like,” said Erin Dreger. “The book was better than I expected,” said Emmeline Haiss. “The characters are so well developed and their stories are so amazing.” “I actually found myself reading ahead of what I was assigned

to read,” said Yale Robb. “I just couldn’t put the book down.” “All the stories were very different and interesting in their own way,” said Dakota Myers, adding that “many of us can relate to the stories.” Kayla Hood said the book “showed both the differences and the similarities in people’s lives.” “I liked how every story was told by a different type of person,” said Paige Felger. “One was told by an elderly Chinese woman, another by an Indian man and another by a teenage girl.” “This book shows how a group of strangers become almost like a family in a disaster situation,” said Estlin Haiss. “They get to know each other and form connections that they never would have otherwise.” “I think the author was trying to get across that everyone has their own past that helps mold their futures,” said Danielle Kemp. “I think this book is amazing,” said Lillie Blazer. “It features different characters with different problems and how they need to learn how to work together.” “The book made you want to think of your own one amazing thing that has happened in your life,” said Jimmy Neff. “It is a very inspirational book.”

An unforgettable performance

Mark Wood electrifies AHS By JASON CHAPMAN The RAB People from all around flocked to Alliance High School on Feb. 9 to see former Trans Siberian Orchestra violinist Mark Wood perform with the Alliance high school and middle school orchestras. The orchestra students spent

much time preparing for the concert, in which they played music quite a bit different from the usual. There were upbeat, heavy songs such as “Inferno,” a rock n’ roll version of the classical piece “Night on Bald Mountain,” and some well-known rock hits, such as Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.”

Gridiron Girls Juniors, seniors to meet on Dawson field

Get classes, get credits Scheduling day is March 29 By CHEYANNE GONZALES The RAB Students technically have a day off on March 29. But they still must show up at school between 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. to schedule classes for next year. Seniors will be required to attend a class meeting that day to go over the graduation schedule and make sure they have their caps and gowns. Underclassmen should have their scheduling papers filled out and ready to be signed by their teachers. Remember, some classes are first-come, firstserved; students can improve their chances of getting into those classes by arriving early. Sophomore Amanda Catterall said she plans to do just that. “It sucks because I have to wake up early to get into certain classes, like voice training,” she said. Students must have teacher approval to get into honors, dual credit or advanced placement classes. Students in dual

credit courses earn both high school and college credit, which can save tuition later on. Students who score high enough on advanced placement tests after taking AP courses can also earn college credit, or skip basic freshman requirements. “I want to make sure everyone is aware of the college opportunities,” said Principal Shawn Jackson. There is even more incentive for this year’s freshmen to take more challenging classes because they get bonus units added to their GPA for taking honors, AP or dual-credit courses. There is now an opportunity for AHS students to take a postsecondary class in Chinese at the University of Mount Union. For many sophomores, this is an opportunity to get into a career and tech program and earn college credit. Mrs. Debbie McKee, head of the Career and Tech Department, explained that the high school is in a different consortium this year,

blackout day. “Everyone looks good in black,” said Mark Pisanello of the Cockpit Crazies. “This got the students to unify, and it’s cool because everyone likes black and has it.” Friday - the day of the pep rally - was red and blue day, and the students of AHS were representing. The music of the Pep Band got students and staff psyched. After the coaches spoke about their seasons, the fun began. First, varsity and JV girls’ basketball players and coaches competed in 3-point games. Mr. John Malsch and Mr. Jeff Graffice joined players from the boys’ basketball team in their own 3-point game, as Graffice sought to defend his honor and his legendary record. Pep from page 1

so there are more universities that will accept credits earned in programs at AHS. Students can now transfer credits to Kent State University, the University of Akron, Youngstown State University and Stark State College of Technology. The freshmen should have an easy transition into their sophomore year because they will go into the Sophomore Academy. Their core classes will again be scheduled in blocks, but they will also have the opportunity to take electives. Mr. Jackson hopes students not only choose classes that interest them, but also think about what their college major might be. It wouldn’t hurt to check with your guidance counselor or Ms. Kayla Johnson, college access advisor, in order to choose classes that would be beneficial for that major. “I want to make sure everybody takes advantage of all the opportunities that the high school offers,” he said.

Girls representing Alliance High School’s junior and senior classes will invade Len Dawson Field this spring for a game of flag football. When it was time for the bowlers to participate, members of the boys’ team were not pleasantly surprised. They thought they would be choosing “best legs” from among the cheerleaders, but instead were judging male coaches with shaved legs. Mr. Adam Thomas and Mr. Tyler Pierce impressed the crowd with their smooth, shiny limbs. The pinnacle of the pep rally was a re-match between veteran grappler Mr. Frank Mancini and wrestler wannabe Yale Robb, representing the Cockpit Crazies. When asked to participate, Mancini had this stipulation: “Make sure everyone knows this is a re-match. I already pinned Yale once.” ABOVE: Luke Van Orsdale and Frank Hill react as they discover the “best legs” belong to Mr. Pierce TOP RIGHT: Even though he lost, Yale Robb’s supporters Morgan Smith, Sierra Gonzales and Samantha Atkinson - remain loyal RIGHT: Seth McConnell shows his Aviator Pride.

The students rehearsed the pieces with Wood prior to the concert. In addition to being very entertaining, it was a unique learning experience. Wood has played with the orchestra in years prior to now, each time bringing many listeners and much excitement. Aria Beer, a freshman, was in sixth grade the last time Wood came to Alliance, in 2009. “I got to play right at the front of the stage next to him, and it was really fun,” she said. Bethany Lewis and Miyako Shields, now sophomores, were in seventh grade. “It was a unique experience, and I learned a lot,” Lewis said. Shields also had an enthusiastic response: “It was the time of my life!” AHS Orchestra Director Crystal Sabik had to work tremendously hard to get Wood to squeeze Alliance into his busy schedule. She was looking forward to last week’s concert. “I am really excited for Mark Wood’s return to Alliance,” she said. “He really gets the students fired up about playing their instruments. I know that this will be an amazing experience for everyone involved.” After another extraordinary concert, many hope to see Wood return to Alliance in the coming years so the orchestra can be “electrified” once more.

bring home a second senior win. Jenkins, the Chronicle adviser, said that she has two goals for this year’s game: to raise money so that the Chronicle can continue to be sold at an affordable price, and to keep Aviator pride high through the end of the year. “I love how it’s a vehicle for school spirit,” said Jenkins, “It brings people together. It’s [also] a great way for seniors to end their time here.” Even guys will have the opportunity to get in on the Powder Puff action. To complete the role reversal of the event, junior and senior guys will have the chance to act as cheerleaders during the game. (Skirts will not be required.) Meetings and sign-ups will begin in March. All students are encouraged to participate, although those interested should note that there will be a fee for their T-shirts. Practices will be held through March and April and will be mandatory. The game will be played in either late April or early May. Jenkins said that she is also looking for coaches for both teams. Four football coaches and two cheerleading coaches will be needed overall. Jenkins also hopes to involve the Pep Band and have a choir student preform the national anthem. “It’s a great way for students and staff to get involved,” said Jenkins. Students and staff who are interested in participating should contact Mrs. Jenkins for further information. It’s also time to order your 2011-2012 edition of the Chronicle. This year’s theme is “Written in the Stars” and will be the best yet! Yearbooks are once again in all color and only $60 if ordered in advance. This year has been full of improvement for the Aviators cheerleaders. For the first time in Alliance High School history, cheer squads brought home two trophies from the annual NBC cheerleading competition, held Jan. 14 at Marlington High School. The Varsity cheerleading squad brought home the sec-

ond-place trophy and the competition squad took third place. “I knew we made a big impression on not only the judges, but the crowd,” said Coach Jaclyn Fassos. “It’s nice to see all your hard work pay off. Preparing for success Softball team starts training

By MARISSA BONDONI The RAB

Pre-season training has already started for members of the Aviator softball team. They are participating in a winter doubleheader league, held at the Spano Dome in Akron. The girls started practicing in early November on Tuesdays and Thursdays with volunteers Pat Heddleston and Mike Dreger, who help coach during the winter season. At press time, the team was 8 and 4 with overall wins and losses, playing high school from all over Northeast Ohio. “We are a little low on girls this year and we need all we can get,” said Heddleston, commenting on the number of girls who show up to practices and are committed to the team. “This year, we only have three returning seniors and one is in-

jured right now,” said Assistant Coach Jim Bondoni, referring to Marissa Bondoni, Erin Dreger and Devon Stanley. “I’m going to look to those girls to lead the team,” he said. “I’m so excited to get back into the swing of things,” said Erin Dreger, the injured senior. “The doctor said I should be back right before the regular season starts.” “I can’t wait until we actually start official practices so everyone can be there and start playing as a team,” said junior Marissa Cvelbar. Junior Abby Heddleston added: “This year should be fun as long as players decide to work hard and show up to everything.” “I hope this year’s season is by far the most fun and the most successful for the softball team,” said senior Marissa Bondoni. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

Top Gun From Page 1 the final day of the tournament. “Donnie worked extremely hard all year day in and day out,” Coach Shaw said. “He did a tremendous job at Top Gun. It shows what comes out of hard work and great effort.” Freshman Spencer Nagy (120) also did a great job. He was only one match away from placing. That’s an outstanding performance for a freshman, but Shaw also had this to say:

“Spencer has done a great job all year and is an exceptional wrestler. He had not lost a single match until the tournament, which came to a previous state qualifier.” “I expected he would go far and it was not a surprise how well he did,” Shaw added. “We expect great things from him throughout his career.” Alliance High School began hosting Top Gun in 1987. It started as a little tournament of

Steede. “Even though we knew we would have stiff competition in the combined-competition division, we knew our routine was one of the best,” said Steede. The competition routine started with three standing tucks and a picture frame made of pom poms, to help “picture the win.” The routine transitioned to a skilled tumbling pass, then ended with a fun dance to “old school” songs. “I knew that we would do really well with the competition routine because we have literally been working on it since August,” said senior Kailey Flaker. Strong, confident, and spirited are just three words to describe the Alliance JV NBC performance. “Although we are a small squad, my girls have worked very hard,” said Steede. The JV squad started with a pride-filled cheer and finished in fifth place. “Don’t worry, we will be back next year, and better,” said

Baseball team plans, conditions Hopes are to “go all the way” By MARK PISANELLO The RAB After a 20-win season last year, the Aviators are getting ready for an even better season this year. Last year, the team fell short in the playoffs. “We plan to change that.” said junior Luke Ince. “We are trying harder than ever to prepare for the season.” The Aviators are returning an experienced lineup, having lost only two seniors. The regular season starts at the end of March. “I am excited for the upcoming season,” said Coach Jeff Graffice. “We have a lot of experienced players returning and only eight teams, but has continued to grow into one of the best wrestling tournaments in the nation. There were 1,400 spectators for the finals this year. Ten mats are used in both gyms, and the shows on the final day have included everything from paratroopers rappeling from the ceiling to sumo wrestlers crashing into each other on the floor. This year, the Aviators will have another opportunity to showcase their talents on their home

Young team on the road to improvement

Emily Retterer looks to make a pass to a teammate in the game against Louisville Photo courtesy of Cockrill’s Studio By KIERRA FOUNTAIN The RAB The girls’ basketball teams may not have an impressive record, but both the JV and Varsity have shown major improvement this year. “We are getting better at the fundamentals and increasing our basketball I.Q. on a daily basis,” said Varsity Coach Keith McGeehen. “When we have a commitment to off-season training, this will greatly be enhanced,” he said. “Hard work and dedication

must become our top priority going forward.” There has been “improvement from all the ladies,” Coach McGeehen added. “Many players have never played or had very minimal experience. I see them getting better each day.” Danielle Kemp, one of the two seniors on the team, said she really enjoyed playing this year, until an injury put her on the bench. “It sucked sitting on the sidelines watching while I was hurt,” she said. “I couldn’t wait until I was back again!” When asked about what she thinks the team could do to improve, she had two words: “attitude” and “respect.” “If you’re going to come out for the team, then stay on the team, don’t try to have other commitments,” Kemp said. “Also, show respect, not only towards the coaches but towards each other.” Of the starters on the team, senior Joel’ven Freeman has become a leader, junior Emily Retterer is handling the ball better, and sophomore Shania Mays is becoming “more physical,” Coach McGeehen said. Sophomore Cheyenne Harris is shooting much better and sophomore Riley Etherton’s footwork is improving on a daily process.

“My favorite part of our routine is the dance because, I can really get into the song and make a lot of facials.” said Leona Weatherspoon, also a freshman. The freshman squad, coached by Brittany Davis, made their first appearance at a competition. Their routine started with an Aviator pride cheer that transitioned into a tumbling pass combined with a jump sequence, then finished strong with a dance. Although they finished in fifth place, they had a remarkable performance. Another remarkable performance was given by the middle school cheerleading squad, which finished in first place out of six in their division. These girls are some of the most talented I have ever coached. I know they will go far in the future,” said Coach Becky Sivula. “I am very proud to say I coach for Alliance,” Fassos said.

At practices, the team has been working on fundamentals that include ball handling, dribbling, passing, and footwork. “Shooting is another aspect we work on every day and is an area that needs to be enhanced,” said McGeehan. Ms. Deirdre Dick, the JV coach, said that team has been “drastically improving” in the fundamentals of basketball: Shooting, dribbling, defense, and offense. Defense and offense have shown major turnarounds, she said. “We have played well in some games and strongly competed in many quarters of our current schedule,” she said. The teams are hoping to end the season strongly and start looking to next year. “We need consistent play out of our guards and limits on turnovers”, said McGeehan. “Our past players have to work on boxing out and rebounding the ball.” “As a whole, we have to concentrate on playing good, help defense, and executing on offense,” he said. “This year has definitely been fun and enjoyable with the girls,” said Coach D. “They’re a young team, so hopefully everyone will come back next year.”

we should go far.” “We have struggled in the playoffs the past few years, but we’re hoping for the best this year,” he added. Right now, the team is unable to go outside because of the weather, so they are concentrating on some new conditioning strategies. The season begins at the end of March. “We have been concentrating more on getting stronger in the weight room,” Graffice said. “We’ve been doing plyometrics, along with running, to gain more speed and agility.” “The conditioning is tough, but it will be worth it in the end,” said junior Hunter Cannon. “Our goal is to go all the way this year.” mats. The Division II District Wrestling Tournament, which was held at Akron Firestone for years, will be hosted by Alliance High School starting on Feb. 24. Sports writers and fans say AHS was awarded the prestigious tournament - the biggest district tournament in the state - because of the way Top Gun is run, with more than 300 volunteers and area businesses involved.

Courtney Elliott By CODY COOK The RAB The Alliance boys’ and girls’ bowling teams both are improving. Both teams had a record of 6-5 at press time. The boys’ team has had some great wins this season with victories over Jackson, East Canton, Massillon, Timken, Canton South and Wooster. They are greatly improved over last year’s season of 4-12. At press time, the boys were ranked second in their division to Wooster high school. The team is being led by junior Alex Bugara and senior Franklin Hill as the two top averages.

“With a year under our belts, we are being much more competitive,” said Coach Chad Morris. With almost twice as many wins as the year before, they are on the fast track to contenting against some of the best teams in the league. The Lady Aviators have improved as well. With a record of 6-5, they are only one win short of their mark last year with multiple matches left in the season. The team hopes to improve and place high in the conference, as well as in tournament play. “I feel good about it,” senior McKayla Mozden said of the season. “I love my team and I hope to finish it with some more wins for the season.”

Breaking records, taking names Courtney Elliott is featured athlete By ALYSSA WARD The RAB Most students may know her from what she brings to the stage during a concert or a Jetsetters performance. They see her on the football field and basketball court, cheering on the Aviators as part of the varsity cheerleading squad, or maybe practicing with the cheerleading competition squad. But what many don’t know is the heat she brings to the bowling lanes. Elliott has changed the face of bowling here at AHS. That is why she is The RAB’s featured athlete. Elliott is a senior and a twoyear letter winner on the Aviator girls’ bowling team, but has been bowling since she was little. Last year, after the return of bowling as a winter sport, Elliott had the opportunity to compete at the state tournament, where she placed 13th. Elliott finished the last season averaging 180, and the beginning of her senior year has been nothing but successful. At press time, her averages was 192. Last year on Jan. 18, Elliott broke a school record with a

Then she broke the record for a third time a 448 on Jan. 2. “I was really excited about breaking the record,” she said. “In a little over a month, I did it again.” “I was so proud of Courtney for not only breaking the record but for beating the best bowler in the county head Courtney to head at the Elliott same time,” said Coach Aaron Hill “We didn’t win the match against Lake that day, but we earned some respect for our young bowling program.” Coach Hill said that Elliot was preparing for the sectional tournament Feb. 11-19, in hopes of returning to the state tournament on March 3. The day before the sectional meet, the team gets together for a carb-loaded dinner, then go to omeone’s house. The girls cut the guys’ hair and they all shave their legs. The team is eagerly awaiting the sectional meet, the most important of the season. The top 30 swimmers go on to the district meet. “I hope our boys’ relay team goes to districts this year. We’ve been practicing really hard,” said Uriel Ibarra-Moreno. Senior Madison Lytle has qualified for this meet the past two years. This year, she hopes to qualify for the Division II state meet. “As a new tradition this year, ‘I Believe’ that each and every swimmer will be able to leave sectionals with a personal best,” said Coach Marikay Kuntzman.

“Just Dance 3” great for fun, exercise Jersey Shore Season 5: Life New features allow four dancers without Vinny

Title: “Just Dance 3” Developer: Ubisoft Paris Release Date: Oct. 11, 2011 ESRB Rating: E 10+ System(s): Wii, Kinect for Xbox 360, PS3 Move When the first “Just Dance” game came out, it quickly became the most wanted dance game. When the second one came out, people went crazy for it. Now, the creators have done it again with “Just Dance 3.” The game is played by following the dancers on the screen; the better you follow, the better your score. The game is full of old and new favorites, like “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” by Kiss. Other songs include “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO, “This is Halloween” by Danny Elfmen, “California Gurls” by Katy Perry, all upbeat and great for dancing. This game brings new features to the series. For the first time, there are dances made

for up to four people who can do different dance moves that blend together. The game also has mash-ups that combine two or more songs to make a new dance routine. As you play the game, different mash-ups become available, keeping the game entertaining. Unlike the first two, the third game is available for the Kinect for Xbox 360. It has a feature that allows you to design the dance and other people can dance to it. The Kinect does not need controllers, so it involves more movement of the whole body. While the Wii has a controller and uses the arms more, it still gives people a good work out. “The Michael Jackson Experience” has a similar format, but you can only dance to his songs. The “Just Dance” games give you a variety of songs and artists, enabling most players to find something they like. For people who like to move and exercise, “Just Dance 3” can be a fun way to work out at home. The dances have different levels of difficulty; they can get your heart pumping and

Professional student “Jane” leads double life

By BRIANA HUNTSMAN The RAB Title: “Jane By Design” Director(s): Gavin Polone, Howard Deutch, Lev L. Spiro and Michael Lange Air Date: Jan. 3, 2012 Air Time: 9 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC Family Starring: Matthew Atkinson, Erica Dasher, India De Beaufort, Andie MacDowell, Meagan Tandy Going from high school student to high-fashion assistant sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? Well, for Jane, that becomes reality. In “Jane By Design,” a new hit series for ABC Family, Jane is a young girl who has a secret life outside school. Jane is not one of those kids with many friends at school, and her life at home isn’t much better. As a child she lost both

her mother and her father, so her older brother had to drop out of school to take care of her. It’s hard for her brother to find a job, so they become very late on bills and Jane wants to help. She looks into an internship at a high-fashion retail company called Donovan Decker. While there for the interview, she is mistaken for an adult and gets a job there instead of an internship. While working at the company as an executive assistant, she also has to stay in school. With the help of her best friend, Billy, she is able to keep both lives apart - for now. Work was going well for Jane, even though a fashion designer named India was trying to make her fail. She thought she would be able to live in both worlds, until the school dance falls on the same night as the company party. She could not miss the party, but also could not stand up Nick, the boy she has liked for many years who finally asked her to the dance. What was she to do? I guess we will find out in the episodes to come. This show is really good. It shows that people can do or be whatever they want, as long as they are willing to work for it.

Concert featured songs from new EP

By KAMEREN NAUGLE The RAB Title: “RevolveR” Artist: T-Pain Release Date: Dec. 2, 2011 Record Label: Nappy Boy Entertainment Genre: R&B T-Pain came out with a new hit CD called “RevolveR.” He says the name comes from the word “evolve,” meaning to make better or to plan for better things to come, to work your hardest and become all you can be. This is his fourth album and the first since “Thr33 Ringz” was released in 2008. Eight of the songs on the album feature his friends, including

Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Detail, Chuckie, and Pitbull. Singles that have been out on the radio are “5 O’Clock” and “Best Love Song.” The song “5 O’Clock” features Lily Allen and Wiz Khalifa. It’s about a guy who goes to the bar and doesn’t get back home to his girlfriend till 5:01 a.m. In “Best Love Song,” T-pain and Brown rap and sing about who is going to write a better love song to win a girl’s heart. In the music video, they recreate the battle of the bands scene from the movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.” With this great album, T-Pain is evolving, making better music, becoming all that he can be.

Of course, we all know that they had a million-dollar wedding on Aug. 20. Only 72 days later, on Halloween, Kim filed for divorce. The drama began among the housemates when Kourtney decides to be more spiritual and brings a yoga instructor to their condo. Kris isn’t too happy about that. He has a reason to be: The guy was a naked yoga instructor! The big issue of having kids is already stressing Kris and Kim out, and Mason, Scott and Kourtney’s son, is always there to remind them. In another episode, Scott wants to practice his Jewish religion, but Kourtney thinks he is just going through a phase. This angers him a lot. Later, Kim confesses to her mom and another sister, Khloe, that she doesn’t like being married, leading up to the final episode Feb. 12. They also did three songs from the new EP that was released in early October. There was “Hollywood Dream,” “Back to Back” and “Killer.” The EP is one of my favorite things that The Ready Set has come out with. Each song is completely different from the others on the album, and and from every other song they’ve ever done. The Ready Set played the most songs, but their performance seemed like the shortest. I had never heard of the other bands, but I enjoyed Plug in Stereo. The music was catchy and the crowd seemed to like it. But during The Summer Set and Downtown Fiction, I thought I was going to die. People were shoving and punching and screeching. But the concert was still awesome and I loved it.

The Ready Set came out in a cloud of smoke and flashing lights with the song “Stays Four the Same.” The crowd was loving it and most people were singing along, although some were too preoccupied with trying to get close to Jordan, the lead singer and creator of band. The group sang more songs from their album “I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming,” including “Melody’s Song,” “More Than Alive,” “Love Like Woe” and “Spinnin.’ ” They played one of my favorite songs, “Young Forever,” which is upbeat and fun to dance and sing to.

Dweezy:Alliance’s up-and-coming star By CASSIDEE SWANK The RAB

Alliance’s own Dweezy, Devante Williams, has been lighting up the music scene with his upbeat, inspirational music. He has a style all his own. While most artists rap about women, money or drugs, Dweezy likes to talk about real things in life, such as failing in love, keeping hope alive, and striving for a better life. Williams is a 2011 graduate of AHS and still lives in town. He has been working on new music since his mix tape, “Diamond In The Rough,” dropped early last year.

He has been working on getting his music out there and his group, Secret Swagg Society, more well known in the area. His latest release, “For My City,” is about Alliance. It talks about the losses we have gone through, and the lives of students that teachers don’t see. It is also about his outlook on life in Alliance. It is ultimately a tribute to the community. I highly recommend checking out this new artist and becoming part of the movement before he makes it big. To listen to Dweezy, go to www.soundcloud.com/therealdweezy or TheRealDweezy’s channel on YouTube.

K.Flay: the next female rapper?

By ASHLEY YARIAN The RAB Kristine Flaherty is just another female rapper. Just like Kreayshawn, she will have her 15 minutes of fame. Even though she hasn’t been in the spotlight yet, she will soon have

her chance. You may know her as K. Flay. She’s not very well known yet, but she’s got the potential to make it big, in my opinion. You won’t find anything like her. She makes her own beats, writes her own raps, sings, plays guitar, and serves as her own

producer in the studio. My favorite song by her would have to be “Less The Zero.” I couldn’t stop listening to it the first time I heard it. “Brain dead, hit the snooze, no job, what’s the use, there’s still life, ya that’s the point” are some of the song’s lyrics, and it gets better. She has many good songs, and such good flow it’s as if the words are gliding out of her mouth. I don’t recommend everyone to listen to her, but give her a chance. You might like her. So take a few minutes and check her out on YouTube. Her EP is available on iTunes and a mixtape is free on her website, www.kflay.com.

The Dreamer

A simple daydream can open your mind to lands unknown, and watch your imagination as it ages and becomes grown. Holding on to a happiness that was only a loan. A ceiling fan, turning and spinning. A kitchen sink, dripping and leaking. Not even a creak in the house, nor a soul adrift. Within this silence, I find my bliss. As my thoughts wander, and I watch my dreams dance across my mind on projector screens. As the impossible flies past my eyes the dreamer inside me slowly dies. ~ Ashley Yarian
