A Report on Prof Huang Huang’s Seminar on Jing Fang (Classical Formula) Theory

What was originally planned to be a three day event, due to the high demand was extended to four days with two days of teaching and two days of clinical observation - with the renowned clinician and jing fang (classical formula) expert, Professor Huang Huang. Around eighty people from more than six countries (UK, Portugal, Estonia, Lithuania, China, Cuba, etc.) came to London from the 24th till the 27th of September 2016, to learn about Classical Formulas and the unique approach this professor has in his clinical practice. Translated by Dapeng Zhang and Yizhen Jia, the seminar was held at the UCL School of Pharmacy and the clinical part at the Institute of Chinese Medicine.

First visit: 23rd April 2013 Chief Complaint: Diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in January. History: the patient in recent months has swelling of the fingers and toe joints with pain, morning stiffness, rheumatoid factor 100, diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, itchy dry eyes, fatigue, recent mouth sores, recurrent diarrhea, normal menstruation, red tongue, pulse rate 80 beats / min.

Second Visit: 11th June 2013 Joint swelling and pain improved, now only the little finger joint of the right hand has pain, menstrual flow reduction, aversion cold, June 7 analysis revealed a rheumatoid factor of 116, red tongue.

Professor Huang Huang has great experience in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, especially in patients who have a presentation that belongs to the chai hu Family. In these cases, he uses the combination of two formulas, xiao chai hu tang and Tangkuei and Peony Powder (dang gui shao yao san) [called chai gui tang by the Professor], and adds fang feng (Saposhnikovia divaricata) plus jing jie (Schizonepeta tenuifolia).

Third Visit: 3rd September 2013 Symptoms have disappeared but there has been a recent a relapse with joint pain in the hands and feet, swollen feet with cold a sensation of cold in the joints of the feet. August 30 blood analysis revealed a rheumatoid factor of 105, dark red tongue.

The formula xiao chai hu tang with the addition of fang feng and jing jie, acts on the exterior by expelling the wind and draining the heat, while dang gui shao yao san moves the blood and drains damp. His clinical experience has proven that this prescription is an excellent modulator of the immune system, especially due to the combination of chai hu, huang qin (Scutellaria baicalensis), fang feng, and jing jie. 15 doses, 2+1 method for dosing. (The 2+1 method assumes a dosing cycle of 3 days. On Day 1 and 2, the patient takes the herbs as prescribed. Day 3 is the rest day, the patient stops taking the herbs. The cycle starts anew on Day 4.)

Prescription: the original prescription was changed, with the amounts of both fang feng and chai hu increased to 20g, 15 doses, the intake dosage was maintained.

Prescription: A repeat prescription was prescribed with fang feng and chai hu both reduced to 15g and with the addition of huang bai (Phellodendron chinense) 10g, 15 doses, the intake dosage was maintained. Final Visit: 29th October 2013 Joints are no longer painful, morning stiffness has disappeared, dry mouth and dry eyes are relieved. Salustino Z. Wong, PhD - Classical Chinese Medicine expert. Born in Havana, Cuba, he leaves for China in 1995. He is one of the few Westerners to complete all of his clinical training in China at the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. He spent 20 years in Nanjing and completed his undergraduate, masters and doctoral studies in Chinese Medicine (1995-2008). He followed several masters in different areas of medicine, martial arts and culture. In 1998 he began his studies of Chinese Classical Medicine, being a disciple of several masters. In 2001 he met his master and tutor, Professor Huang Huang, who introduced him to the clinical investigation of the classics of the Han Dynasty. He began teaching Classical Medicine in Italy in 2005 and in 2006 taught for the first time a Classical Medicine course in Lisbon, based on the Shang Han Lun. He currently teaches several courses in Europe and Latin America. Pedro Albuquerque, LAc, Lherb. Born in Lisbon, Portugal.
