Renee Castillo Cover Letter It is with great enthusiasm that I write to submit my name for the position of Principal at Lothrop Elementary School. I have earned a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and currently hold a Vermont teaching credential and an administrative credential in California. With two years experience as an assistant principal, one year experience as a district-level administrator, and more than 13 years experience as an elementary teacher, I am confident that I possess the qualifications required to promote Lothrop Elementary's vision. As the attached resume will detail, I am currently serving as an assistant principal at Rio Vista School of Applied Learning, where I am the co-administrator in charge of various programs and initiatives. I work collaboratively with staff to ensure lessons are rigorous and aligned to Common Core Standards, and student learning outcomes are continuously monitored through the analysis of data. As an assistant principal, I supervise a diverse staff and more than 900 students. I currently serve as co-administrator implementing the AVID program and assisting with the technology roll out at our site, an experience that has magnified my site planning and instructional leadership abilities. As a district level administrator, I was responsible for programs such as foster youth, homeless, discipline, and attendance. I was the chairperson of the SARB (Student Attendance Review Board) committee and my duties involved adherence to timelines and maintaining compliance with school law & the California education code. This position allowed me to make valuable contacts in the community to support our students and their families. As a teacher, I have worked with area colleges as a mentor teacher for students in their credentialing programs. I have served as a BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Induction) support provider, assisting new teachers by providing support and professional development in accordance with Standards of Quality and Effectiveness for Professional Teacher Induction Programs and aligned to the California Standards for the Teaching Profession. I served 6 years as a curriculum council member, working to develop curriculum and assessments that align with state standards and improve effectiveness of instruction. I also provided technology based professional development for teachers within our district. My strengths include: collaborative leadership, strong/effective communication and interpersonal skills, staff capacity building, academic program development in technology and AVID, and coordination and leadership in pedagogical programs and best practices. As Assistant Principal, I aspire to a school culture and educational program with high expectations for all students, encouraging them to be responsible, life-long learners. This is my second year in this position. Many of our students attend our school beginning in kindergarten. We have the privilege of watching them grow before leaving for high school. Throughout this time, our students become our kids and their parents are often like family.
