הארץ 2 ,פברואר2005 , קריאת ביניים אורי דרומי טוען בכתבתו על הבריחה מאושוויץ כי בספרי החדש איני מסתמכת על מקור ראשוני וחשוב כספרה של ליוויה רוטקירכן ו"זו השמטה כבדה" )מוסף "הארץ" .(28.1ברצוני להפנות את דרומי הן לספרי ( עמוד (58והן למאמרי ב"תיאוריה וביקורת" )מס' (24, 2004שבהם אני מתייחסת לכתביה של רוטקירכן .קריאת הביניים של פרופ' חנה יבלונקה בכנס באוניברסיטת חיפה אינה הוכחה מספקת לכך שחומר חשוב זה אינו מופיע בספרי. דרומי גם מדלג בכתבתו על פרט חשוב בסיפור :אי הזמנתו של רודולף ורבה להעיד במשפט אייכמן )יבלונקה ממשיכה לדלג על פרט חשוב זה בספרה גם 40שנה לאחר המשפט( .דרומי בחר לציין כי זיכרונו של ורבה בגד בו באחד מהמשפטים הרבים של פושעים נאצים שאליהם נקרא להעיד והדגיש כי מכחישי השואה מצאו בכך "שלל רב" .בספרי אני מביאה הוכחות לכך שמכחישי השואה דווקא מצאו שלל רב בעמימות שבה מתוארת הבריחה מאושוויץ בהיסטוריוגרפיה הישראלית. דרומי אינו מציין כי בספרו של אלפרד וצלר )שותפו של ורבה לבריחה(, שנכתב מאחורי מסך הברזל ,הבריחה מתוארת כפעולה קומוניסטית ששיאה משלוח הדו"ח על אושוויץ למוסקווה .האם תיעוד זה אמין יותר מזה של ורבה ,שנכתב במערב? דיון על כך ניתן למצוא בספרי. ולמען הדיוק ,ורבה לא עבד במכון ויצמן אלא במכון הביולוגי בבית דגן .הוא גם לא "בא " מצ'כיה .ב 1958-גם משם היה צריך לברוח בדרך מסוכנת עד מאוד. פרופ' רות לין חיפה Haaretz' February 2, 2005 Uri Dromi claims in his article about the escape from Auschwitz that in my new book, "Linn fails to take into account Livia Rothkirchen's ‘Hurban Yahadut Slovakia’ (‘The Destruction of Slovakian Jewry’), published by Yad Vashem in 1961. This is a major oversight." I would like to draw Mr Dromi’s attention to page 58 in my book and to my article in Theory and Criticism (no. 24, 2004), in which I discuss Rothkirchen’s writings thoroughly. Dromi also states that "When Linn presented her thesis at a conference in Haifa, Prof. Yablonka spoke up from the audience and mentioned Rothkirchen's work." I would contend that a passing comment made by Prof. Yablonka during a conference at the University of Haifa is hardly sufficient evidence that such an important work is not cited …in my book
In his article, Dromi also skips an important point of the story—the fact that Rudolf Vrba was not invited to testify during the Eichmann Trial. (Forty years later, Yablonka, too, skipped over this important fact in her book on the Eichmann Trial). Dromi chooses to tell his readers that Vrba often testified at trials of Nazi war criminals, that his memory was not always accurate, and that Holocaust deniers pounced on these inconsistencies with relish. In my book I clearly illustrate quite the opposite. I show how Holocaust deniers have exploited the ambiguity with which the escape from Auschwtiz is described in Israeli historiography. Dromi does not indicate in his writings that Vrba's partner in the escape, Alfred Wetzler, wrote his book behind the Iron Curtain and that in his book the escape is described as a Communist endeavor, culminating in a report about Auschwitz being sent to Moscow. Which report, then, is more reliable document – Wetzler's or Vrba's, which was written in the West? This issue is discussed in my book. Finally, to be precise, Vrba worked in The Biological Institute in Beit Dagan, not at The Weizmann Institute. He also did not "come" from Czechoslovakia. Even in 1958, one would have had to flee from there via a very dangerous route. Ruth Linn
