Laptops for use in classrooms can be checked out from Media Services at your campus. Flash drives are relatively inexpensive and may be purchased by the department. If the “need” for a laptop can be accomplished by using a flash drive, your request will not be approved. Unlike a regular desktop replacement, any peripherals to accompany a laptop must be purchased by the individual or their department. Reason for Laptop instead of a Desktop Computer: (See second page explanation of categories.) 1. Documented use of computers or instructional technology in classroom.
2. Required to perform college work at multiple sites 3. Special need
Justification:
I accept responsibility for having a laptop computer should it be approved. A stolen computer containing student or personal information might result in violations of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act for which I could be held liable. ____________________________________________________ Requestor (full-time faculty/staff only) Date

EXPLANATION OF CATEGORIES 1.) Documented use of computers in classroom — Choose this reason if you already regularly use computers in your classroom instruction. If you use specialized software, please include this in your justification. Admittedly, getting a laptop and projection cart from media services and writing your presentations to incorporate such technology is a significant undertaking. The CWTCOC is satisfied that those who are sufficiently motivated to have already incorporated such technology in their instruction will make good use of a personal laptop. However, such usage needs to be documented by the department chair and dean. 2.) Required to perform college work at multiple sites — Select this reason if you regularly teach at multiple campuses or do college work, such as outreach programs, at multiple locations. This justification also specifically includes those who are effectively “on-call”, such as computer support personnel or those in administrative positions where they may be expected to get into the system to address a problem regardless of where they are. It does not include simply wanting to do schoolwork at more than one location, such as writing lecture notes at home. 3.) Special need — This category would include any other pressing need for a laptop that is not covered by the categories above.
