Mission Statement: The mission of Justice High School is to provide year round college preparatory education for all enrolled Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley students. Justice High School's curriculum and program design is ideal for at risk youth who are disconnected from the traditional school system because of juvenile delinquency, drugs and alcohol, alienation, or other factors. Justice High provides its students with a structured academic setting with high expectations. Justice High's philosophy is that these 'at risk' youth can become successful if given an opportunity and structured environment. The school's program provides instruction using the AP model. Justice High's educational program will allow students attending full time to finish their high school requirements within three to four years. Justice High School does not discriminate in its hiring practices or its admission of students. Justice High gives each student the opportunity to grow into a respectful adult who will have the knowledge, will, and self-esteem to succeed in college and life.

Justice High School Policies School Hours: Academic hours are from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Please do not schedule appointments for your student prior to 4:00p.m. A guardian phone call is required to the staff at Justice High (303) 859-5196 prior to the school releasing your student for an appointment. If your student leaves without administration’s consent it will be considered an unexcused absence. ****All rules and policies are subject to change and will be implemented and enforced at the will of the Administration. **** BEHAVIOR: Students are expected to conduct themselves in a fashion that promotes learning, teaching and community. Your student will be taught our behavior expectations during the first week of school when we introduce the Discovery program. DISCIPLINE: Justice High School uses a level system to determine what consequence a student will receive based on their behavior. Parents are informed every step of the way as a student enters this level system. AFTERNOON PROGRAM: This program is used for students who are entering the school well past the start of our normal block or who have been moved to the program because of behavior. TOBACCO USE: Tobacco use of any kind is not allowed on school property. WEAPONS: Any weapons brought onto school property will be confiscated and destroyed and/or turned over to the authorities. The disciplinary action is subject to a case by case basis. LOITERING: We do not have passing periods and therefore during the school day there will be no loitering in the hallways. Before and after school students are not permitted to loiter outside and/or inside the building.

ELECTRONICS: All cell phones, mp3 players, and other various hand held devices are not allowed to be on during the school day and bringing these items are strongly discouraged. If the device is seen, rings, vibrates, is noticed, or is used without permission, the electronic device will be confiscated by the teacher or staff member for the remainder of the period. If the student refuses to give the staff member the electronic device then the student will then be sent to the administration. The administration will take the electronic device for 1 day. The student will either receive the electronic device before school the following day or will have to wait until afterschool of that next day. If you want your electronic device the next morning come early, if not you will not get the device until after school. IF THE STUDENT REFUSES TO GIVE THE ELECTRONIC DEVICE TO ADMINISTRATION THEY WILL BE SUSPENDED AND CAN RETURN WHEN THEY TURN IN THE DEVICE. THIS ACTION WILL ALSO REQUIRE A GUARDIAN MEETING. JUSTICE HIGH IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ELECTRONICS LOST, STOLEN OR DAMAGED IN THE STUDENT’S POSSESSION OR IN THE POSSESION OF THE STAFF WHEN CONFISCATED. The best policy is to not bring expensive or important electronics to school. VIDEO SURVEILLANCE: Justice High School reserves the right to use video surveillance in and on the school property. Evidence from such surveillance may be used in determining consequences for students. METAL DETECTORS The school reserves the right to use a metal detector on all students entering the building and at anytime the administration deems it necessary. LEVEL SYSTEM: The school runs on a level system. Certain behaviors mandate certain consequences based on this system. If your child violates the rules of the school, they will be placed on a level accordingly. The school may require your student to stay after school for detention where a restorative justice meeting between the parties involved will take place. The school may also require in-school-suspension which requires the student to stay after school in our afternoon program until four o’clock pm. Students may also earn positive points throughout the week for good behavior and are rewarded accordingly. Students can move down levels for good behavior as well. DISCOVERY PROGRAM: Every student needs to go through the Discovery Program to be at Justice High School (JHS). The program teaches students the expectations and rules of JHS. The school’s discipline system is configured based on this program and utilizes what is referred to as the redirect system.

REDIRECT SYSTEM: The redirects are used to point out the student’s disruptive behavior as it gives the student ownership of their behavior. This system restarts every class. So if a student gets one redirect in their first class, they start out the next class with no redirects. 1st redirect- The student is told what their disruptive behavior is.

2nd redirect- The student is asked to leave the room and fill out a process sheet. The teacher will then have a discussion with the student and give the student a choice to go back to class or go see an administrator. 3rd redirect- The student is told to go to an administrator. The student will then tell their side of the story and be removed from the classroom for that class period. The student will be required to have a meeting with the teacher involved and an administrator after school. DRESS CODE: At anytime, any member of the Justice High School staff can require a student to go to administration because of how the student is dressed. The administration may deem the clothing to be inappropriate and has the right to instruct the student to change into different clothing. JHS has the right to change/modify these codes. - Shorts and skirts must reach the end of the middle finger tip - No clothing that supports drug culture, foul or demeaning language, or is gang related - No midriff bearing shirts - No underwear showing - No low cut shirts - No sexually suggestive clothes - No gang insignia on exposed skin of the student’s body (including tattoos, eye brow slits, etc.) Any such insignia needs to be covered at all times or the student will be sent to administration. - No drug insignia on exposed skin of the student’s body (including long pinky finger nails. etc.) Any such insignia needs to be covered at all times or the student will be sent to administration. - No sunglasses will be allowed to be worn during class. - Hoods on hooded sweat shirts will not be allowed to be worn during class. - No bandanas of any color on person. GRAFFITI/TAGGING ON PROPERTY: Any graffiti put on school property by a student will result in the student cleaning up the offense and/or paying for the property. Depending on the graffiti the student will have other consequences ranging on our level system. The degree of consequences depends on the number of offenses and the degree of the actual graffiti. DISRESPECT TOWARDS TEACHERS AND/OR STUDENTS: Student is place on a level depending on the incident and must participate in a restorative justice process. PHYSICAL ALTERCATIONS BETWEEN STUDENTS: Consequences will depend on altercation and parties involved. Consequences will include being placed on level system and possible referral to local authorities. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: - Are mandatory as they are a part of JHS expectations. - Missing these activities will result in negative points and could result in filing for truancy. A physical education credit is a requirement for graduation and many of our extracurricular activities count as that credit. - These do count as classes that are required

MAKE UP/BEAUTY PRODUCTS: Using make up/beauty products in class will result in a redirect. If it becomes a problem then the student will have to meet with an administrator.

ACADEMIC HONESTY AND INTEGRITY: Suspected incidents of academic dishonesty will be referred by instructional staff to the school’s administration for investigation. In order to maintain a reasonable level of consistency within a school, consequences will be applied by the school’s administration after consultation with the appropriate instructional staff. The general magnitude of an infraction and the level of premeditation involved will be considered before consequences are determined. Our school strives to maintain consistency in consequences from infraction to infraction. Possible consequences for infractions may include: • A failing grade for the assignment • Placement on level system. Students should be reminded that a violation of copyright law carries criminal penalties. SEARCHES: A student's person and/or personal effects, such as a purse, book bag, back pack, etc., may be searched. Administration will conduct random searches. All lockers, desks, storage, and similar areas provided for student use on school premises are school property and remain at all times under the control of the school. Student use of such areas is subject to the right of school authorities to open or enter and inspect the contents for any reason at any time without notice, student consent or guardian consent. The interiors of student vehicles may be inspected if a school authority has reasonable grounds for suspecting that the search will turn up evidence that the student has violated or is violating either the law or school rules. PHYSICAL WORKOUTS: Justice High School reserves the right to require that a student perform physical workouts as a consequence to their behavior and actions if they choose this form of consequence. Alternative consequences will be offered. USE OF TECHNOLOGY: If a student is found to be searching for, looking at, or printing out any material that is deemed inappropriate by the administration the student will be placed on the level system and will require a meeting with their guardians. If a student uses any form of technology that is not allowed during class the staff will confiscate them and JHS will keep this technology for one day. Destruction or defacement of any technology will result in placement on the level system and possible reporting the incident to the police.

STUDENT ABUSE OF ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS: Students are subject to immediate referral to administration and or suspension for: use, possession, distribution or sale of illicit drugs, including alcohol and anabolic steroids, or drugcontaining paraphernalia. For purposes of disciplinary actions, student infractions of this policy will be cumulated for a one-year period. A staff member and an administrator will determine if the student is under the influence of alcohol or an illegal substance based on a body of evidence, which includes, but is not limited to, the student’s behavior, odor, physical appearance or witness statements. If the student is suspected of drug use then the school will require a urine analysis (UA). The student and their parents/guardians will be responsible for the cost associated with the UA. Failure to take a UA will be interpreted as a positive UA. First offense (use and/or possession): The student will be suspended out of school and required to take a UA. Placement on level system. Second offense (use and/or possession): The student will be suspended from one to five days. Progression on level system. Meeting with student and student’s guardians. Third offense (use and/or possession): The student will be moved to the afternoons. Progression on level system. Meeting with student and student’s guardians.

DISCIPLINE OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: Except as otherwise provided below, students with disabilities may be disciplined on the same grounds and under the same procedures as students who do not have disabilities. • The principal or designee shall immediately remove a student with a disability from a situation which he/she poses a threat of physical harm to himself/herself or to other persons, by placing the student in an appropriate alternative setting or by suspending the student in accordance with governing law. Such placement in an interim alternative educational setting is permissible even if the disabled student’s behavior was a manifestation of his/her disability. • Students with disabilities may not be suspended in excess of ten consecutive school days (or subjected to a series of suspensions or removals during the school year that constitute a change of placement) unless a determination has been made that the misconduct constituting grounds for suspension or removal longer than these specified periods was not a manifestation of the student’s disability. • Prior to expulsion of a student with a disability, a determination must be made that the misconduct constituting grounds for expulsion was not a manifestation of the student’s disability.

ATTENDANCE: - A student who misses enough classes to be filed for truancy will be filed for truancy. The faculty reserves the right to fail any student they feel has not attended enough classes to completely grasp and understand their work. If the student misses enough classes to fail it does not matter if the student has a passing grade, they will be given a failing grade. It is Colorado state law that a student must attend school until the age of 17. The school reserves the right to keep a student in detention or place them in a Social Responsibility Training class for excessive tardiness or absence including absence from extracurricular activities. MAKE UP WORK: - If the missed day is excused by the administration the work can be made up. - If the missed day is not excused then it is up to the individual teacher. NONDISCRIMINATION: Sexual harassment will not be tolerated and an offense will be dealt with by the administration. Discrimination based on race, age or gender will not be tolerated and an offense will be dealt with by the administration. Minimum consequences include a meeting with administration. SUSPENSION: If a student is suspended they may be required to leave school property, report to their homes and return with a parent before they may return to school. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: Along with exceeding the district and state standards JHS requires students to take and pass two college level courses and gain acceptance into three colleges or universities. SENIOR PARENT NIGHT: Mandatory. This meeting takes place at the beginning of the school year and attendance of both the student and their guardians are required. LAKE POWELL SENIOR TRIP: The senior trip at the end of the school year is mandatory as it is part of our course work. PHYSICALS: All students must have a valid physical on file at the school while attending classes or participating in extracurricular/athletic activities. STUDENT COMPLAINTS and GRIEVANCES A student/guardian may in writing lodge a complaint or grievance to the principal. The principal will then in writing respond to the student/guardian on how the complaint or grievance will be handled. If the student/guardian disagrees with the outcome of the complaint or grievance they may in writing alert the principal of their disagreement and send their original complaint or grievance to the chairman of the board.
