Dear Friends and Family, I hope this letter finds you all well and in good spirits. On Sunday, October 14th, 2012, I will be running in San Francisco’s Nike Women’s Half Marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training. It isn’t very often that we get the opportunity to do something that will benefit us and make an amazing difference in the lives of others, too. With your help, I hope to make this an exciting and worthwhile endeavor. I will be running for two honorees – Elaine Kirchner and Sadie Rae Zapata – who have battled leukemia & lymphoma and benefitted from treatments made possible in part by LLS. Elaine is 58 years old and a first grade teacher. She is happily married to her husband, Greg, for 29 years. They have 2 sons. In November 2010, Elaine felt numerous swollen lymph nodes and glands on her neck. On January 6, 2011, Elaine was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and underwent surgery in the following weeks to have the lymph node removed. From January – June 2011, Elaine completed six separate chemotherapy treatments which consisted of one long day of chemo and two short days every twenty-eight days. Since her last treatment, her PETSCANS and bloodwork have shown no signs of the lymphoma. She is grateful for the excellent treatment she received and for the support from Team in Training last year. She is excited to participate this year again as an honoree.

Sadie is 4 years old and described as being a sassy, smart, and funny kid. She loves Strawberry Shortcake and her favorite music artist is Adele. Sadie was diagnosed with leukemia at age 2. She is currently in remission and had surgery on Feb 16 to replace her port. All went well. Sadie’s last phase of chemotherapy (“maintenance” – where she receives a dose of chemo every night at home and a higher dose once a month at a clinic) is OVER! Her last treatment was on June 12, 2012! She has fought and continues to fight a hard battle. She and her mom are so thankful for the support and love. She is excited to be the honoree for our Fall races – and her mom, Kristen, will be running with us at the Nike Women’s Marathon!

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to curing Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and Myeloma and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. Leukemia is the number one killing disease of children, yet affects 10 times as many adults. The cause of leukemia remains unknown. However, the effectiveness of recently developed treatment methods and steady advances in research brings us closer every day to finding the cause of leukemia and related cancers and probable cures. I have begun my training for this 13.1 mile journey through the help of professional Team in Training coaches. They’ll help make sure I make it to the finish line in record time on October 14. Some of you might think that I am nuts, and those of you who know me will agree, but what I have to endure in the next 3 months pales in comparison to what these kids and adults go through on a daily basis. With your help, I hope to raise at least $3,700.00 to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by October 4, 2012. I have set an interim goal of $1,500 by August 15th. Please support me in this journey by donating generously! I have enclosed a Sponsor Form, and all contributions are tax deductible. (Tax ID: 13 5644916) The easiest and fastest way to donate is online at my Team in Training website: http://pages.teamintraining.org/cca/nikesf12/rencarnaci. Checks can be mailed to me – made out to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Anything that you can give to help meet my goal would be greatly appreciated.
