Roll Away Your Stone Title ___________________________________ & Sons Author / Director / Mumford _________________________________
Context (Where Found / Viewed / Read?) I went to a Mumford and Sons concert in Berkeley, where I heard this song for the first time. Content / CD / Summary / Precis (Say? “Plot? Setting/Situation? Key lines/phrases scenes, etc? ) 1)"Roll away your stone, I'll roll away mine, / together we will see what we will find" 2)"Darkness is a harsh term, don't you think? / And yet it dominates the things I see" 3)"Starts hide your fires, these here are my desires" 4)"And so I'll be found with my stake stuck in this ground/ Marking the territory of this newly impassioned soul" 5)"You have neither reason nor rhyme / With which to take this soul / That is so rightfully mine"
Content / CM / Meaning? / Theme(s)? 1) If you are willing to show my who you really are and remove your mask, I will do the same for you. 2) It seems as if the world is shrouded in darkness in the forms of hate, strife, war, and death. 3) Do not shine light on me, because my desires are not respectable ones and wouldn't be expected of me. 4) I've decided to change my ways and have in immovable soul, I will decide my values for myself and they won't be changed. 5) You cannot say that my soul is tainted because it belongs to me, and I must decide my what my own beliefs are. Form (Diction? Construction Terms? Symbolism?) Chorus consists of the same lines repeated twice- drive in the point Slows down and becomes quieter at end- emphasize that he is serious "You"---> God Stone-----> Mask, false personality Commentary (What do you want to say? Why like? Questions? Synthesis / Allusions-Connections / Relevance to personal experience, to literature, 20Q’s? etc.)? “Poetic” Traits? This song is very fun to listen to, but makes the listener think as well. During the first few listens I thought he was talking to his lover, but now I am beginning to see that he could be talking to God. He sends mixed messages in this song- at first, it sounds like he is willing to open up to God. Later, however, he sings that he is a sinner and doesn't want God to see his true desires. At the end, he decides that he wants to have control of his own soul and that he will decide on his own if he wants to believe in God or not. Choices in Life- Opening up soul to God Loss of Innocence- "Darkness is a harsh term, don't you think?" God- Who he is trying to understand Search for Self- What does my soul believe in? What are my true desires? Yearning of the Spirit Poetic Traits- Search for God, Trying to Overcome Darkness

20 Ride Title Highway ___________________________________
Author / Director _________________________________ Zac Brown Band Context (Where Found / Viewed / Read?) - Heard on Pandora on Country Radio
Content / CD / Summary / Precis (Say? “Plot? Setting/Situation? Key lines/phrases scenes, etc? ) 1)"I want so bad to hold you / son there's things I haven't told you" 2)"And a part of you might hate me / but son please don't mistake me / for a man that didn't care at all" 3)"So when you drive, / and the years go flying by / I hope you smile, / if I ever cross your mind" 4)"My whole world / it begins and ends with you / on that Highway 20 Ride"
Content / CM / Meaning? / Theme(s)? 1) There's so many things I want to tell my son, but I don't have the courage to tell him yet. 2) I'm sorry that your mom and I didn't maintain our relationship, but we didn't divorce without thinking about how it would affect you. 3) I hope that years from now you remember me as a good dad who cared about you, even if I couldn't be with you as much as I should've been. 4) Even if you don't think about me, I never stop thinking about you.
Form (Diction? Construction Terms? Symbolism?) Turning truck around at the Georgia line-----> not quite having the courage to talk to his son about the divorce
Driving-----> Reminiscing Commentary (What do you want to say? Why like? Questions? Synthesis / Allusions-Connections / Relevance to personal experience, to literature, 20Q’s? etc.)? “Poetic” Traits? This song helps me remember that even though my parents were never together, it doesn't mean they love me any less. It makes me feel really sorry for the singer. Usually a kid is afraid of letting his parents down, but this song reverses that. Zac sings about how he let his son down, and that he'd be honored if his son even thought about him any more. He wants to let his son know that he loves him, even though his past actions may not suggest that he does. Generations/ Family- Divorce, Love for Son Life and Loss- Losing his son's love Love: Power and Pain- Pain of Divorce, effect on his son Loss of Innocence- Raising his son was a "pleasure of (his) life", now his son is old enough to see his dad's mistakes Poetic because of unconditional love singer has for son, a strong love that he and his wife never had
