Roller  Coaster  Project     Students  will  work  with  their  group  and  build  a  roller  coaster.  There  are  four  parts  to  this  project.     1. Lab  Notebook  (Worth  50  points)  –  You  will  write  all  the  information  for  this  project  in  your  lab  notebook  as  if  it  were  a   regular  lab.   • Follow  the  lab  format   • Purpose   • Labeled  diagram  of  your  roller  coaster  including  height  and  distance  measurements   • Procedures  you  went  through   • Raw  data  –  time  and  distance  data  collected  for  at  least  three  trials     • Evaluation  of  data  –  calculations,  graphs,  etc.   • Conclusions  –  as  if  it  were  a  lab     2. Roller  Coaster  (Worth  50  points)  –     • Built  from  recycled  materials  or  items  around  your  house  (Students  provided  materials)   • Must  start  on  a  hill  and  end  on  a  hill   • Must  include  a  second  hill   • Must  have  a  centrifugal  loop  in  between  (See  examples  below)   • The  roller  coaster  can  only  be  as  long  as  the  table,  but  it  can  loop  back  on  itself   • The  mass  (or  marble/ball)  must  be  seen  going  through  the  track  (For  timing  purposes)     3. Calculations  and  Graphs  (Worth  50  points)  –     • Must  be  in  your  lab  notebook  with  an  additional  copy  turned  in   • Times,  Height,  Distance,  Velocity,  and  Acceleration  for:   • The  entire  roller  coaster  (A-­‐G)   • From  the  top  of  the  first  hill  to  the  bottom  of  the  first  hill  (B-­‐C)   • From  the  bottom  of  the  first  hill  to  the  top  of  the  second  hill  (B-­‐D)   • From  the  top  of  the  second  hill  to  the  bottom  of  the  second  hill  (D-­‐E)   • Through  the  loop  (F)   • Graphs  or  Maps  of:   • x  vs.  t   • v  vs.  t   • a  vs.  t   • Motion  Map   • Description  of  the  motion     4. Written  Paper  (Worth  50  points)  –     • Must  be  submitted  to  TurnItIn.com  (ID#7198122  and  Password  -­‐  Blakeney13p)   • Explain  the  terms  –  terms  such  as  velocity,  acceleration,  force,  centrifugal  force,  and  any  other  terms  used   to  describe  their  roller  coaster   • Explain  how  these  terms  relate  to  the  roller  coaster  as  you  describe  your  roller  coaster  and  its  motion   through  each  portion     A   B   Examples  of  roller  coaster:  (not  proportionate)
