Rye School District Google Apps For Education (GAFE) Parent/Guardian Permission The Rye School District (RSD) has implemented Google Apps for Education (GAFE). GAFE provides members of the RSD learning community with webbased productivity and collaboration tools that enable our learners to work, learn, and share from any location, on any device, at any time. GAFE is a Google offering that is distinct from Google apps for consumers. GAFE provides additional security, administrative, and archival controls specifically designed for use in an educational environment. GAFE is used successfully by over 40 million students, teachers, and administrators world wide. A Google Apps For Education account will be created for every RSD student (Grade 1 through grade 8), teacher, and staff member to be used for school related work. This account will be considered the learner’s official Rye School District GAFE account until such time that the learner is no longer enrolled in the Rye School District. Although managed by the RSD, the GAFE accounts and created materials are housed on Google servers, thereby giving our learners access to Google webbased applications (e.g., word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation, drawing, forms, calendar, website authoring tools, and mail) when and where they are needed. The applications enabled for students will be based on grade level and coursework requirements. Email Accounts Restricted Access The Google email application will be enabled for student accounts based on coursework requirements. Tthe Rye School District institutes a “walled garden”, where students will not have the ability send mail outside of the school domain (ryesd.org) nor will they be able to receive email from outside of the ryesd.org domain. Student Conduct It is expected that students using their GAFE accounts will behave in a safe and respectful manner consistent with behavior specified in the Student Handbook and by the Technology Responsible Use Policy. Use of Google Apps for Education is considered a privilege. The RSD reserves the right to access and review content in the Google Apps for Education system at any time. The District maintains the right to immediately withdraw the access and use of an account when there is reason to believe that violations of law or district policies have occurred. In such cases, the alleged violation will be referred to the building principal for further investigation. Privacy and Security Google is committed to protecting the privacy and security of all their users, especially students. Data that companies, schools, and students put into Google systems belongs to the users.
Google does not sell or share Google Apps for Education data to third parties. Google provides security features to the local district administrators specifically designed to keep students’ data safe, secure and private. Google Apps for Education is governed by a detailed privacy policy which can be found at http://www.google.com/edu/privacy.html . Further, Google has signed the Student Privacy Pledge which can be found at http://studentprivacypledge.org/ . Purpose of this Permission Form Technology use in the Rye School District is governed by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). COPPA applies to commercial companies and limits their ability to collect personal information from children under the age of 13. COPPA also applies to school districts that use thirdparty website operators, such as Google Apps for Education, to offer online services to students. This permission form allows the Rye School District to act as an agent for parents in the collection of information for the purpose of creating a Google Apps For Education account. The school’s use of the student information is solely for education purposes. Students will not be provided with access to their Rye School District Google Apps For Education account until this permission form has been submitted.
