Glad Book, Sad Book Lesson for K or 1st When we introduce children to the library collection, we must explain the proper care and handling of books. one method of teaching the correct way of caring for library books is to describe a Sad Book and a Glad Book. Show the children two books, one torn and dirty (Sad Book) and one new and clean (Glad Book). Ask the children which book they would like to read. next, get the children to tell you ways to make sure all books remain Glad Books. First Discuss: • Wash hands before handling books. • Remove the book from the shelf by holding the spine in the center. • Turn the pages using the top right hand corner of the right hand page • Always treat books gently and handle them carefully. • Use a bookmark to keep your place in your book. Never turn down page corners, dog-ear, or turn the book face down to keep your place, because this will break the spine of the book. • Keep books in a safe place at home or in your backpack. • Do tell all your friends about your favorite books, then they will want to read them too! Give each student a Glad Book/Sad Book Puppet (face on a stick), have them show the happy or sad side of the puppet as you ask questions—similar to thumbs up, thumbs down Would this make your book glad or sad: • You push in your chair • Your return your library book on time • You dropped food on your library book • You ran in the library • You were loud when another class was working • You used a bookmark to keep your place in a book • You used a shelf marker to keep your place on a shelf • You showed Mrs. Hamilton a torn page in a book • You showed a new student around the library • You asked a friend for help • You picked up a book that fell of the shelf (and put it on the shelving cart) • You waited for your turn in the checkout line • You left your book on the playground • You were quiet while another class was working • You put your water bottle in your backpack with your library book • You left your shelf marker on the table • You left your book on the floor at home and your dog ate the corner • You forgot to push in your chair • You can your library book to a friend after school
