Administrative Procedure 165 – Appendix A
SAFETY DRILLS Background The purpose of a safety drill is to give students and staff practice in handling emergencies in an orderly fashion. Quick response is important but is not to be stressed at the expense of good order. Too much emphasis on haste can create an atmosphere of urgency that, for some, may be close to panic. All persons in the building, with no exceptions, must participate in the drill. If the students are expected to take a safety drill seriously, it must be evident to them that all staff also regard it in that way. Procedures 1. All principals must complete one safety drill per month, with a minimum of six fire drills during the school year (three prior to Christmas and three after) and two lockdown drills. 1.1
The district is also requiring that the first fire drill and lockdown are completed by Thanksgiving.
1.2
The choice of the other two safety drills to be completed is at the discretion of the principal. (The four types of safety drills are: directed response, evacuation, lockdown, room clear).
1.3
All non-school based sites must complete a minimum of one fire drill and one lockdown per year.
2. All staff are to be instructed in the sounding of an alarm and the reporting of fires. It is the responsibility of the staff to take all reasonable measures to ensure the safety of the children after evacuation of the building. All personnel are reminded that evacuation is of first and foremost importance. The site specific details are included in your Emergency Response Plan: http://intranet/default.asp?V_ITEM_ID=572
