In this section, the interviewee discusses his father and mother’s families. 1.1 Father’s Family 0:00—Father’s Immigration Sam talks about his father’s life in Belarus and his immigration to the United States at the age of 16. Sam recollects that his father originally lived in Chicago, and then in Cincinnati, Ohio for a time before settling in Canton, Ohio. 3:25—Memories of Father Sam describes his father’s work at the coal mine where he was able to converse in several different languages with his fellow workers. He additionally describes his father’s mechanical skill and his work as a blacksmith for the local community who knew him as “Big Al.” 7:00—Father’s Sister Sam talks about his father’s sister who lived in Canton with three or four children. Sam rarely saw his aunt as his family did not have a car to visit her. However, she occasionally visited them and one summer her son stayed with the family for a month. 7:55—Cousins Sam remembers two other children in the family, Sarah and Elliot. He remembers Elliot as a particularly intelligent young man who went on to get a degree in engineering. 1.2 Mother’s Family 0:00—Mother’s Immigration Sam talks about his mother who was born in Poland and came over to the United States with her family as a baby. The family ended up in Canton, Ohio on a small farm. 0:44—Memories of Grandparents Sam traces his ancestry back to his grandparents, sharing knowledge of their immigration and livelihood. He then reflects on childhood memories of his grandparents living next door. He particularly remembers Sunday dinners with the extended family all of whom lived in the Canton area. 8:50—Uncle Peter Sam remembers his uncle Peter as an athletic man who would take him fishing and hunting. Uncle Peter was the manager for the local mining community’s coop grocery store in which Peter’s family had a share. 1
