Sampling Instructions Navigating to a Sampling Site with Garmin GPSMap 76CSx Use the steps below to navigate to a sampling site on Lake Attitash using the Garmin GPSMap 76CSx hand-held GPS. The unit used by the association has been pre-programmed with the coordinates of the sampling sites. To use a different Garmin GPSMap 76CSx unit to navigate or to learn more about the GPS functions, refer to the GPS owners in the Sampling Instructions section of http://sites.google.com/site/attitashwater/. Powering On and Initializing To turn on the GPS, press and hold the red power button for about 1 second. The welcome page appears briefly on the display followed by the satellite page. If the display is too dim for easy viewing, press and release the red power button again to turn on the back lighting. Antenna behind this area Power button

Wait about 1 minute for the GPS to display at least six solid black satellite strength bars, indicating that it has located its satellites and has initialized. The time needed depends on how long the GPS has been turned off. Note: While initializing and using the GPS, hold it horizontally (display facing upward) and out from your body so you are not blocking the antenna’s view of the sky. Navigating to a Sampling Site After turning on and initializing the GPS, use the steps below to navigate to a sampling site. 1. Locate the destination sampling site and site number on the appropriate sampling location map. The map to use is indicated in the instructions for the parameter you are sampling. The sampling map for cyanobacteria sampling is different from the sampling map for phosphorus, dissolved oxygen and pH. 2. Press the FIND button to display a menu of choices. Waypoints is highlighted by default.

The programmed waypoint names match the sampling locations on the sampling maps. 5. Press the ENTER button to select the waypoint. The waypoint details page appears, displaying the waypoint coordinates. The menu choice Go To in the lower right is highlighted by default.

8. Keep the GPS pointed toward the front of the boat and start moving the boat forward in a straight line. Note: The GPS simulates a compass by comparing its current location to its location a few seconds earlier. This function does not work properly unless the boat is moving. 9. Continue steering straight until the compass display stabilizes (a few seconds). 10. Adjust your course by watching the red bearing arrow on the display, which points toward the destination. When you are on course to the destination, the red arrow points directly forward. 11. Continue toward the destination until the distance units change from miles to feet. This happens about 500 feet from the destination. 12. Slow down and steer carefully to keep the bearing arrow pointing directly forward. 13. When the distance reaches about 30 feet, you are usually close enough to the destination to stop and begin your sampling. Powering Off To conserve the GPS batteries, turn off the GPS if you will not be navigating to another site within a few minutes. To turn it off, press and hold the red power button for about 1 second.
