5682 Whispering Pines stevensville, Michigan 49127 October 5, 1990 Dear John:

I really enjoyed the latest newsletter. We are making good progress. I was going to write right away after reading it but at about that time I heard from Elaine that she had found the father of my great great grand father John Sly, and I waited to see what more I could learn about him. Elaine said she had had this imfomation for a long time; but had over looked it. A correspondent of hers listed John Sly who married Mary Haskins as the son of William Sly who came from Ireland and settled in Leeds County, Ontario. IJm- quite sure we have the right father this time because my John Sly was married in Leeds County Ontario. I hav.e written to Shirley Courtney of Port Huron and she ~aid that she found two William Slys from Ireland who werellmving in Leeds Co. Ontario. After reading and re-reading her imformation I concluded that the first William and his wife came from Ireland with five children. One of them was probably William Jr. William Jr. had 14 children and one of them was my John. When William Jr. died he left several dependent children, all under 11 years of age. That confused me for awhile but I decided that these children may have been orphaned grandchildren because William was, I believe, in his 60~s at his death. My aunt, Lois Baker, and I have a lot of research ahead of us to try and

prove John's reIa tionship to the William's and to try and find the other 13 names of his brothers and sisters. I forgott to mention in my last letter the names of the people in the Family Portrai t-1883. They are: Seated-Zebulon Sly and wife Anna Eliza; In the back are-Cephas, Fanny, John, Grove and Robert. That's all of the news for now. Sincerely,

("

BIffiRAPHICAL SKEl'CH OF KAREN (FRANKLIN) MILLER I am descended from William Henry Sly who was born in st. Lawrence County, New York in 1859. His parents were John Sly b. 1823, probably in Leeds County, Ontario; and Mary Haskins b. 1824. William Sly came to Michigan in the 1880's and settled in lngersol Township, Midland County. Midland County at that time was a dense forest of hardwoods and pine that the pioneers had to clear before they could begin to faIDl. William Sly woarked in the lumber camps in the winter and farmed in the summers. I was born and grew up about three miles from my great grandfather's fann. All of William's descendants lived in Midland County at that time, but my generation has scattered allover the United States and one lives in Brazil. I began to research my family history in the late 60's and early 70's while my grandmother was still alive. At the time I was busy raising my family and so I had very li.tle time for genealogy. It wasn't until my children graduated from highschool that I had time to actively pursue my hobby. In the meantime my father's sister, Lois Baker (also a member of the Sly Family Association) became interested in genealogy and did a lot of research that I couldn't do because she still lives in Midland County. Now we are working tdlgether and have made great progress on some of our lines. I have done research in the Grace A. Dow Public Library in Midland CQunty as well as the eourt House. In Saginaw, Michigan I have visited the public library which has a good genealogical collection in the Eddy Room. The new library of Michigan in Lansing has a lot of genealogical materials on Michigan and Canada, but I was only there for a few hours one afternoon. While our daughter was attending Western Michigan University -In Kalamazoo, Michigan, I did some research at the uni versi ty library. There are a lot of state and county histories there and the archives section has materials on the sou!hwestern section of Michigan, as well as a number of census reels on Michigan and the New England states. Outside of Michigan, I spent one afternoon at the Mayfmmwer Library in Plymouth, Massachusetts. That library includes a number of published family bio graphies. My favori.e research library is the Allen County library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Although I ha\Je spent a number of days doing research there, I still haven't had time to look at all of the published family histories for my surnames. There are many, many other research aids there that I haven't even begun to explore.

Sly family history

I have been given your name by Keith Sly, whom I have been corresponding with via e-mail re: my family. I am the ggg-granddaughter of William and Sarah Sly who resided in Smith Falls on the land where the Rideau Canailock now stands. Their son Joshua married Elizabeth Ballantyne. One of their sons, Peter married Mary Peebles and their son Peter married Ida Smiley. Peter and Ida were my grandfather and grandmother. Their son Arthur was my father. I have done extensive research on my family history, but I am having a problem finding out where William and Sarah came from. They show up in Canadian history around 1795 at Smith Falls, Ont. In 1851 Elizabeth was a widow and was living at Bristol, Que. Joshua had a brother Roswell that we cannot find any trace of after the first mention of him in the archives. His sister Rebbeca married James Maitland of Kilmamock, ont. Would you be able to assist me in any way with this information? Please reply. Dorothy (Sly) Thibert.

Re: family history

I have done some research on the information I received from Rev. Gray and have found the following: Our William Sly was only married once. The records from Municipal Records Section A Wolford Township Book 1802-51 Appendix 587 Inhabitants ofMontague 1808 Wm Sly Age 48 Sarah Slly age 47 Joshua Sly age 26 Roswell Sly age 24 Sarah (sic) Sly age 19 Rebekak Sly age 14 Anna Sly age 9

************************************ This definately shows that Williams wife Sarah was still alive and living with him in 1808, so he could not have married Ann Gouldsberry. However, I found in the records I have from the Church ofthe Latter Day Saints (Morman) Family Rercords division, that a William Slyk married Ann Gouldsberry in 1786 in Orange New York. They had 2 children that I can find and they were: 1. Arthur Barber born 1800 in Orange, NY. Married Catherine Johnson born 1800 Orange Newburgh in 1834 at Orange Newbrugh. 2. Charles Hamilton born May 14, 1792 at Orange. Married Susan Haines 1815 at Orange NY 2nd marriage - Sarah Johnston 1816. Charles and Sarah had Jane Ann born 1828 orange New Windsor. Hope this clears up the concern over William being married twice. I am going to the Morman Family Records again on Monday morning to try to find some more. Ifyou want me to try to find anything for you please contact me before Monday A.m. If anyone can tell me how I can get hold of the land records for Smith Falls, Onto (Montague or Wolford Township, Please let me know. THE DAYS OF THE PINE

(

Come all you gray-haired lumber-jacks Whoever that you be; I long to take your trembling hands, Your wrinkled forms to see. I helped you cut this forest down, I cannot help but sigh. I once was called, "Cast Iron Bill", But now I'm "Old Bill Sly". McCarty was our foreman in 188" As fine a burly Irishman that ever Crossed the sea.

He picked his crew from Saginaw,

They came from every land;

They came from rocky Canada

They came from o'er the sea; .They came from the lands of tryanny, For a home in the lands of the free. On the 18th. of Septem\ler, I remember Well the day When McCarty led his gallant men To the Pinewoods far away. One hundred-twenty-five in all, The pick of every land. For seven long months we heard him call, "Hurrah! my boys, it's day,11 Through rain and snow, through sleet and cold, We made the forest ring. And When the spring it did return, We'd eleven million in. Our logs were piled like mountains high For a mile around the short~ And then to break the rollways McCarty he did roar. He says, ''My. lads<;be careful, "Now hear me one and all, You're brave, you're bold, you're active, But danger's lurking near. You're just the boys to help me now, To get the river clear." When the dynamite would thunder, And the logs came booming dOwn, You would hear the shouts of our gallant men With many a leap and bound.

When the rollways all were broken

The logs went far and wide,

But they bore the mark of ownership, As they floated on the tide.

Of this grand crew but few are left, And they are old and gray. They're moving on to the great beyond And soon will pass away. But we love to sit and tell you Of the days we used to pass; Of the days of when I starlled and froze But made a home in Ingersol at last. Call in some pleasaat evening, When the birds are nestling low. And weill sing those songs together Thai we sang so long ago. William Sly
