The Role of the School Counselor Gone are the days of school counselors sitting in their office simply handing out college applications, making schedule changes for students who want to drop a class or meeting with the troublemakers in the school. We are no longer known as Guidance

Counselors. We are now known as SCHOOL COUNSELORS. Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of:   

academic achievement personal/social development career development Student Services Office Mission Statement The mission of the CHS Student Services Office, in collaboration with other stakeholders, is to ensure a safe & supportive environment that supports all students by providing a comprehensive & developmental school counseling program that addresses each student’s unique academic, career & social-emotional needs, & helps them develop meaningful, responsible & productive lives that empower them to experience lifelong success in a changing society.

Secondary School Students Developmental Needs High school is the final transition into adulthood and the world of work, during this time students begin separating from parents and exploring & defining their independence. Students are deciding who they are, what they do well, and what they will do when they graduate.

The ASCA National Standards for Students & Illinois Social/Emotional Standards are the foundation of the CHS School Counseling Program. Common Core Standards are also supported through school counseling lessons.

Direct Student Services

80%

of a school counselor’s time should be spent on direct services, which are in-person interactions between school counselors & students.
