Step 1 - Needs Assessment and Goal Selection Describe your selected professional growth areas of focus, as well as information from your selfassessments that supports your selections. If holding multiple certificates, please indicate the Role for the Goal aligned with the Standard and Criteria/Strand. Note that all elementary education, middle level math / science, and secondary sciences / technology teachers are required to include a specific focus on the integration of STEM instruction as part of their PGPs. (RCW 28A.410.2212) Professional Growth Goals Rationale Standards-based Benchmarks Based on your self-assessment, identify areas of focus that will lead to your professional growth

What will you and/or your students be able to do as a result of your professional growth that you and/or they are not able to do now?

For initial, continuing, and professional level certificates, focus on the “career” level benchmarks listed at http://program.pesb.wa.gov/professionalgrowth-plan-pgp-t/career-level-standards-forpgps

1. Research, grow in knowledge, and share understanding of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and its implications for student learning. 2. Increase knowledge and understanding of Washington State Learning Requirements and Common Core Standards to enable more specific academic counseling with students and parents.

1. I will be able to better advise colleagues in developing successful interventions for FASD affected students. Better interventions will result in better learning. 2. A better understanding of the scope, sequence and anticipated learning requirements will inform my academic counseling with students, parents/guardians, and staff. Interventions will be better targeted.

1. SC 5.B. 2. Collaboration on student learning. Participate in and build effective teams of educators and families to support student learning needs. 2. SC 5.B. 3. Barriers to learning. Counselors convene, lead, and collaborate with others in addressing systemic barriers to learning.

Step 2 - Professional Growth Action Plan Activities What specific growth activities will you engage in to obtain the FORM SPI 1697 (1/2014)

Proposed Evidence Briefly describe the evidence that you will

identified new learning? The activities should focus on both the content knowledge you acquire as well as the skills you develop.

collect. Evidence may include areas beyond test scores such as attendance rates, discipline referrals, programs implemented, and other student or adult data.

1a. Review FASD research from: organizations, journals, books, online resources. Collect personal experiences. 1b. Attend a NOFAS NW conference for education and networking. 1c. Present Middle School staff with an overview of research, strategies and interventions for educating FASD affected students. 2a. Working with Dept heads at my school to obtain the most recent Learning Requirements and Common Core Standards for Middle School English/Language Arts and Math. Determine how these standards are impacting the curriculum at our School. 2b. Share a summary with my Counseling Colleagues.

1a. Create a resource notebook of the most relevant FASD research, educational strategies and interventions for improving student learning. 1b. Present an all staff training offering an overview of research and recommended strategies and interventions for educating FASD affected students. 2a. Document at least 5 academic counseling encounters and/or implemented interventions which are informed by a better understanding of Student Learning Requirements.

Step 3 - Evidence of Professional Growth Final Review Describe the evidence that you have collected. Provide evidence and documentation for the supervisor or certificated colleague to review.

Comment [BO2]: Activities are clearly aligned to goals. Activities do not have a method to measure professional or student growth. There are a variety of activities. Activities lead to new learning / practices / interventions, etc.

Goal 1. Research, grow in knowledge, and share understanding of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and its implications for student learning. -- Have reviewed and collected research and information from multiple sources and have logged that information in a binder and in server folders. -- Attended and online webinar and an in person NOFAS NW conference with great information and networking. -- Created a Prezi presentation on FASD (definition, characteristics, implications and educational strategies) and presented in our 5/20/14 all staff meeting. Goal 2. Increase knowledge and understanding of Washington State Learning Requirements and Common Core Standards to enable more specific academic counseling with students and parents. -- Met with math and Eng/Lang department teachers and gathered the most recent Common Core Standards for those subjects. Discussed timelines and strategies for how these departments are implementing curriculum to teachers these standards. -- Shared my new understanding and documents with my colleague.

Step 4 - Reflection/Implications Describe your learning and outcomes from the PGP activities. Based on this learning, what are some next steps that might guide future professional growth?

Comment [BO3]: Evidence is aligned to goals and activities. Some evidence is well defined and detailed. Some evidence demonstrates impact of growth actitivies.

My PGP activity to better understand and communicate the educational impacts of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders was my most enlightening activity. I was amazed to find that Federal DHHS (2006) documents indicate that FASD is the leading cause for developmental disabilities in the Western world. FASD is much more prevalent than we suspect and has profound implications for educating and disciplining fetal alcohol impacted children. Next year I plan to be a better advocate for students who may be impacted by any possible combination of brain function disabilities. In academics and behavior training, students with FASD need a different approach to enable learning. With a broader understanding of Common Core Standards I will be able to better advise student and parents regarding expectations and planning. Furthermore, I will be more prepared as an Assessment Specialist to help implement the new Smarter Balance State Assessment. In reviewing the standards it is also evident that meeting those standards will not be the measure of success for many of our highly impacted students.

Step 5 - Review of PGP Completion (to be completed no later than June 30)

FORM SPI 1697 (1/2014)

Comment [BO4]: Reflection demonstrates growth and results of learning through the PGP. Considers future learning possibilities.
