SCHOOL CALENDARS Background An advisory committee made up of principals, district staff (Instructional Services, Transportation, Human Resources and Communications department representatives), ATA Local 55 and senior administration meets regularly to design regular and year round calendars for each year. The school calendars are created based on the liturgical calendar, Alberta School Act legislation, district administrative procedures and needs, school community recommendations and district website feedback provided by teachers, support staff, parents/legal guardians, and students. Procedures 1. The School Calendar Committee finalizes the calendars in the December/January time period prior to the next school year. The district also provides tentative draft calendars for the next three years depending on the information available on any given year. These tentative calendars will feature basic information (i.e. start-up date, Christmas break, etc.), but will remain in draft form until the year before when they are finalized. 2. The district calendar generally includes: 2.1

Teacher organization and professional development days spaced throughout the school year.

Parent Teacher Conference dates as appropriate for the grade levels of schools in the district.

A Christmas break of two full weeks including three weekends for regular calendar schools.

An Easter break of one week including two weekends (if Easter occurs the first week of April or earlier).

A spring break of one week including two weekends (if Easter occurs later than the first week of April). 2.51

A short Easter break with Good Friday and Easter Monday as non-operational days will also be provided.

3. The calendar shall be generally balanced between the two semesters to accommodate instructional time at the high school level. 4. The chief superintendent or designate will give notice to Alberta Education, prior to May 31 in each year, with regard to the Board-approved calendars for the upcoming school year.
