 Freddie, the aforementioned cat, passed into cat heaven as I was finishing

up this book. He was high-maintenance, but he was my biggest source of workplace joy. I would gladly spend a year cleaning carpet stains for another ten minutes with him.  Freddie taught me a lot about finding joy. For him, a nap on top of my warm computer monitor and a baby’s sock stuffed full of catnip were all he needed to have a splendid day. Even in his twilight he never missed a chance to find joy or to give it. His frail body would somehow make down the stairs and to the door to greet me every time I came home, no matter how many times I went in and out during the day. When he ate, it was with a gusto that seemed as if he were tasting food for the first time in his life. When I brushed him, he purred like a lawn mower. He lived in the moment until the moment was gone.  My final advice - and the only one in this book that won’t get you fired, sued, or beaten – is to get a pet if you don’t have one. That way, at least one thing will go right for you every day. Your job might still suck, but it will suck less. If you already have a pet, give it a hug right now. You’re done with this book. There is no excuse. That my friend, is joy.
