EDITORIAL Welcome to the new and improved SDMC yearbook for 2015 ! In the past I have found the yearbook to be an invaluable document when competing in the speed league to work out the criteria for winning trophies or working on the TRK database to ensure that the points scoring systems were correctly encoded. I hope that people can now see how close they came to winning various trophies and will try even harder in 2015 – it is this participation that makes the club work ! However, when taking over from Chin as editor and building on his excellent work over the years I have looked at in a different way. Firstly I felt that the efforts of everyone who had competed in the last year should be recorded, so I have included all of the TRK championship tables. Furthermore, there are a number of trophies to commemorate illustrious members of the SDMC, although for those younger members not fortunate to know these great people, there was nothing written down about their contributions, achievements or how the trophies came to be set up. Therefore I began researching the history of the club and its members, my thanks must go to early and founder members Chin, John Symes, Graham White and David Stevens for their invaluable help with this. I hope you enjoy reading this and maybe we should organise a club commemorative trip to the Rose and Crown pub now that I have found out where it is ! I am also grateful to Chin for providing some very good pictures of each of the trophies, I hope this brings their stories alive and makes you all want to get your hands on one ! I personally am very proud to have won my first major awards from the club this year, the Polkacrest and Basil Elkington Trophies and fully intend to do even better in 2015. Now who will challenge me ? Good luck to you all in the 2015 season ! Alex Peters

ROSE AND CROWN

ROSE AND CROWN CHAMPIONSHIP This is the Club's oldest championship and possibly the most important as it incorporates all that we do. Points are awarded to competitors at all events in which SDMC was involved in the organisation. The award is named after the Rose and Crown pub at Green Street Green in Kent, which was used as a club meeting place early in its history.

The public house was original situated at the foot of Old Hill with a pond and green infront of it. For much of the 18th century, it was owned by the local brewery, serving their Fox’s Ales. When the current A21 Farnborough Way was built in 1927, the old pub stood on the route of the new road, and it therefore had to be replaced by the present building, set back from the road. Note - ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for any of the ROSE & CROWN Page 8 of 79

ROSE AND CROWN trophies, contenders must score 3 Chalky White points by marshalling or otherwise assisting in the organisation of Club events. ROSE AND CROWN SCORING Points are calculated using the formula S/E x (E-(P-1)) but with a minimum of 10, where:   

E = actual number of entries in the class, or event if not subdivided. P = position in class, or event if not sub-divided. S = value from the following matrix.

FTD or outright win gains extra 10 points, Did Not Finish = 10 points. POINTS MATRIX FOR ROSE & CROWN TROPHY CALCULATIONS EVENT/STATUS

ROSE AND CROWN David Seigle Morris is best remembered for running the Gulf London Rally between 1964 and 1967. This forestry event was a true marathon, eclipsing even the RAC Rally for speed and distance. It is hardly surprising then that, in his career as a works driver with BMC and Ford between 1960 and '65. His best results were on the Liege (fifth and sixth in works Healey 3000s) and the Alpine (two coupes in Cortinas and an outright victory). He was a BMC works driver and also shared a Lotus Cortina with fellow SDMC club member Vic Elford. David did hill climbs and stages, whilst Vic drove road sections. David worked as an architect on the LCC schools building programme. Past Winners: 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975

JIM BATE TROPHY Awarded to the Committee member scoring the most ROSE & CROWN points. (First awarded 1991; previously known as the Committee Cup). Jim Bate was the treasurer for SDMC and lived in Petts Wood. He was a skilled navigator who had a special trick to avoid carsickness on events by eating Mars Bars ! He was a Navigator on the RAC rally and always offered helpful advice to competitors when he was marshalling on an event. Because of his work for the club, it was decided to make the committee cup his memorial. Past winners: 1970 T Potter 1971 T Potter 1972 W Patterson 1973 W Patterson

1200 TROPHY Awarded to the member scoring the most Rose & Crown points in a taxed and insured four-seater saloon car of less than 1400cc (less than 1200cc up to 1995). There is a gap in awards between 1995 and 2008 due to nobody competing with a 1200 engine, before the decision was made to change the award criteria. Martin Mobsby was involved in establishing this trophy. Martin was an active member for many years, social secretary, and commentated at Valence hill climb and other events.

DES QUINN BOWL Awarded to the member scoring most Rose and Crown points, having signed on as official or competitor at Club organised events. 2 points are awarded at events of National B or higher status; 1 point all other events. Des Quinn was a keen club member who lived in Forest Hill. He enjoyed autotest and rally events. Des was the landlord at the Bell in Kemsing when SDMC first went there, he donated the trophy and sadly died a relatively short time later. His widow Katy then married Alan who was landlord of the pub that was then over the road and we moved with her. The points for this championship in 2014 were as follows: Page 20 of 79

Discretionary points are also awarded at other events in which we play a significant part, 1 point being awarded for each half day or evening work party under supervision of the Clerk of Course. (Max 3 points per event). BASIL ELKINGTON CUP Awarded to the member who, in the opinion of the Committee, has done the most for the ACORN magazine and or the official club website. (First awarded in 1991. Prior to this a perpetual award, “The Authors Cup” was presented.) Basil Elkington was an early member of the SDMC and was club secretary for many years. He had served in the army at Dunkirk, then left to become a colonial policeman Palestine in 1947 – as a result he couldn’t stand the smell of oranges due to the terrible things he had seen. He was then posted to Tanganyika and finally came home to join the SDMC in 1960. He mainly competed in rally events and was deputy clerk of the course on the coronation rally in 1953, which later became the Safari Rally. Basil died 1997, so the committee chose to commemorate the work he did on the Acorn magazine, renaming the Authors Cup in his honour. Past Winners: Page 29 of 79

COMPETITION

COMPETITION TROPHIES The wards in this section feature trophies awarded based on competition points systems other than Rose and Crown, Speed or Rally championships.

MARK DAWSON MEMORIAL TROPHY Awarded to the member who best represents the spirit with which Mark approached his motor sport. Rankings from our four tables for competing and marshalling are combined with any no-score in each table being heavily penalised. For the first two years this was awarded to the best performance by a club member at our premier speed event (Snetterton and Cadwell). Mark Dawson was a very popular young member of SDMC who worked as a telephone engineer. He was competition secretary on the committee and competed in all classes of events rally, autocross, speed, marshalling and, organising. Sadly he died of cancer 2004. Marks parents wanted an award to commemorate Mark and so the trophy is awarded to people who compete and contribute in all aspects of the club in the same way that Mark did. Championship points for 2014 were: Joy Waiton Andy Elcomb David Balderson Paul Sales

SPEED CHAMPIONSHIP Sevenoaks and District Motor Club has been running a speed championship since 1970 and has had the benefit of being well supported by sponsors over the years. During the Seventies the Kentish Times Cup went to the winner of the championship, but in 1980 Bristol Street Motors began an eleven year run as the championship's sponsor. Most of the Nineties was taken by Polkacrest who proudly continued the tradition, but for 2000 we were pleased to welcome The Marketing Machine at the head of this prestigious championship. The championship incorporates a number of awards as well as classes, such as Single-Seater, Tourist Trophy and Hillclimb categories. Prize money is offered as well as trophies and we are proud to acknowledge widespread acclaim for this competition. Eligibility is restricted to Sevenoaks members only and requires gaining some marshalling points to qualify for an award. More recently we have had the sponsorship of Glazewing and StorGuard. Regulations and further details are available from the Speed Secretary or the Competition Secretary. NEIL DAVISON MEMORIAL SHIELD The Neill Davison Memorial Shield goes to the driver scoring most points in Hill Climb rounds of the Speed League, other than the overall winner of the Championship. Neil was the chairman of Croydon MC. As a sprinter and rally driver he formed the Weald MC with Chin to get around licensing restrictions from MSA, to allow club memebers only events to be organised. From 2015 onwards this excludes the overall winner of the Championship. The PMJ company based in Southborough was started by Doug Jenning (the trophy is named after his wife Pauline M Jenning) and was sold to Dave Wilkins when he retired. JOHN GOTT MEMORIAL TROPHY Awarded to the driver scoring most points in the Rally Championship. 1973-76 to the winner(s) of the Rally Championship. John Gott was the Chief Constable of Northamptonshire and an international rally driver. This trophy is actually a genuine Coupes des Alpes for completing a stage unpenalised. Between 1942 and 1945 he was attached to Bomber Command and he was awarded the George Medal for rescue work during an air raid, and the MBE for rescuing the crew of a blazing RAF plane. In 1947 he acquired an HRG and finished every Alpine Rally from 1948 to 1951, winning a Coupe des Alpes in 1951. By the late fifties he was a member of the highly successful BMC works rally team which dominated the Alpine and Liege Rallies of 1960, and he also took class wins on the Tulip, Liege and Geneva rallies, mainly in Austin Healeys. In 1960 John was appointed Chief Constable of Northamptonshire and retired from rallying. He held this post until his death, and was known for his outspoken views on the wearing of seatbelts and speed limits. He Page 69 of 79
