The Secondary MAT Program The nine-week summer program, offered on the Juneau campus, prepares students to begin their teaching internship when public schools begin in mid-August. During the school year interns complete a nine-month, full day internship with master teachers in public schools across Alaska. Principals and superintendents have commented and appreciate the fact that UAS MAT students complete a full year internship before applying for their first teaching positions. The Secondary Ed. Graduate Programs at UAS follow a clinical model, where students learn to teach through teaching and timely, relevant feedback and reflection. Interning with Juneau Alaska Music Matters (JAMM): UAS students conduct their 9month internship with JAMM, an El Sistema-inspired program which uses the power of music and ensemble to help children reach their fullest potential. JAMM serves approximately 500 students in three elementary schools in the Juneau School District. JAMM Director Lorrie Heagy serves as the Mentor Teacher. She is the 2011Alaska Teacher of the Year and a Sistema Fellow who studied at the New England Conservatory and in Venezuela to bring Sistema's transformative approach to the United States. By participating in the UAS Secondary MAT program, students are engaged in a professional community of student teachers completing their internships together and reflecting on their teaching practice through virtual class sessions and discussions throughout the school year. Interns are also supported through on-site consultations and observations by UAS faculty.
