Q1‐ [ 25 Marks ] : Outline and describe the aims of the geological and geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects. Q2‐ [ 25 Marks ]: Illustrate by using technical sketches ONLY the following: a‐ Tunnel effect on ground water table. b‐ The relation between rock types and their resistivity & seismic velocity values. c‐ The variation of radial and tangential stresses above and around an elliptical tunnel. d‐ Design nomogram (graph) of Barton’s system. e‐ The variation in boundary stresses in the roof, floor and side‐walls of a circular shaped tunnel with variation in the ratio of the applied stresses ( K ). Q3‐ [ 25 Marks ] : Outline some of the areas requiring more detailed exploration borings. Q4‐ [ 25 Marks ]: Provide equations for the following, explaining all terms in the equations: a‐ The compressive stress ( σz ) around a circular tunnel. b‐ The tensile stress ( σx ) around a circular tunnel. c‐ The tensile stress ( σt.e ) at the roof and floor of an elliptical tunnel. d‐ Terzaghi’s rock load Hp ( in feet) on a tunnel located at a depth of more than [ 1.5(B – Ht) ] if the rock condition is “ Moderately blocky and seamy “. e‐ Unal’s support load ( P ) from the Geomechanics classification.
